An Open Letter From Speaker Gerald Polley

People wonder why I side with The Republicans trying to keep the unions
from taking over The FAA. As I say, I am not anti union. I
am against forced unionism. I would not be against the current
procedure of a majority vote to establish a union in a workplace, as
long as those who do not want to join the union are not forced to, that
anyone being hired does not have to join the union in order to get a
job. Americans will not be slave labor to union bosses who stay
in power by giving millions of dollars to The Democrats so they'll make
everybody in the country join their unions and be forced to donate to
The Democrats, or, lose their jobs. It isn't gonna happen in
America!
Let me tell you a little story.
Many years ago back in my reckless youth, I was working for a very
exclusive restaurant. I won't say where, because the incident
still embarrasses the owner. One employee had been trying for
years to get a union. He finally managed to convince the other
employees to vote one in. I made it clear, as soon as it was
required to pay union dues I was done. I would not pay a Mafia
boss for my right to work. The man who had organized the union
kept begging me to stay, telling me all the things that the union
would provide. The union organizer kept getting in my face, too.
I told him in no uncertain terms where he could go.
They had this big gorilla with them who was on the verge of being a
retard. No offense to retarded people, I've worked with a good many of
them and they were excellent workers. But this particular guy was
absolutely useless and was only working there because he was part of
the union crew. One day he got right up in my face and said
"Enough! Shut up! You're going to stay, you're going to
join the union, and you're going to pay your dues. No more crap that
you're leaving! I heard the boss wants to put you in charge of
some things. The union will approve of it. Don't be an
idiot! You're staying! And you're shutting up!" I got
right up in the guy's face and asked him if he was threatening me,
remarking that nobody like him ever threatens me, to get out of my face
and stay out of my face. Because the next time he got in it he
might not have one any more! The big moron backed off, looked at
me and went "Grrr!" then screamed "It's no use! This guy's
brainless. He's an idiot. He doesn't understand
anything. We wouldn't want him anyway."
The
boss came out of the office screaming "That's enough! You're the
idiot! You have no idea who you're messing with, what this man is
capable of. You're the God damned fool here! If I had my
way you'd be outta here for threatening people!" "Whoa!
Whoa!" the union boss said, "You don't say things like that to my
people! He's trying to help this man. He's got a right to
express his opinion. We could benefit him greatly, but he's rejecting
us. We can't understand why. He better not present any kind
of a danger to my workers, or I will call the police!" The boss
laughed. "I'd like to hear what they tell you!" he remarked.
I finished up working there and went to
work someplace else. Everybody there was always asking me to tell
them the story. Three months later I was walking by the old
restaurant and saw it was closed. I walked over and found a big,
hand written sign in the window that said "Closing Due To Union
Harassment." I wondered what had happened but didn't see anybody
that had worked there until several years later when I was in a store
and heard somebody call my name. I looked up and found it was the
boss from that restaurant. We talked for a few minutes about
other things, then I asked him what happened.
"I caught an employee red handed stealing," the owner told me, "fired
him. The next day he walks in and punches in. I told him he didn't work
there any more. The union boss came over, said "Yes he does. He's
entitled to a grievance hearing. It's your word against his. Nobody
else saw anything. You just don't fire people because you
feel like it! There's a union now." I said "That is
it! He's' outta here, now! We do The Field's party at the
end of the month. I've done it for thirty years. The next day we
close." Everybody screamed "You can't do that!" The
guy that had organized the union cried "I've worked here 20
years! You can't just close the place!" "Sure can!" the
boss told him, "I own it! There's no partnership or anything. I'm
the straight owner. If I want to shut the doors, I'll shut the doors.
You wanted a union, let them find you work someplace else." The
union screamed and hollered, even tried to take legal action. But
everybody said "He owns the business. If he wants to close it he
can close it." I got a little place down the coast," my old boss
told me, "too small for any union to bother with. I'm perfectly
happy! Many friends come down to have their functions there every
year and we reminisce about the old place, but God damn it, when I say
somebody's fired, they're fired! No idiot says I can't prove it
when I catch 'em in the act!"
Several
years after that I was working in a place that lost their kitchen
manager. The hotel manager came out one day showing a guy
around. I looked at him, he looked at me and said "Is that
Gerald?" I said "It most certainly is!" He reminded me who he
was, where we'd worked together, and I said "Oh, yeah, I
remember." The hotel manager looked at me strangely, showing the
guy around a bit more, then left. A few minutes later he
returned, still carrying the guy's application.
"You know that guy, Gerald?" he asked. "Doesn't look like you
cared too much for him." "Remember that story I told you?" I
remarked, "About the union and the owner closing it down? He's
the one that organized the union. We're not exactly the best of
friends." "Oh!" the manager moaned, "That's him? Thank you!
Thank you very much!" He tore up the application he was carrying
and threw it in the trash can. I guess he didn't want that kind
of trouble in the hotel! As I'm fond of saying, things come back
around to those who try to force their wishes on other people.
It's too bad! But this isn't the only incident that I had with
unions. That's why I'll always be with those people that don't
particularly dislike them but would never joined one. I'll never
have anything to do with one. If one takes over a place where I'm
workin' I'll leave, I won't be a slave. And anybody stupid enough
to be one has my sympathy.
As I say, don't get
me wrong, unions do some good, and people have a right to have
them. But they have no right to force people to join them in
order to have a job. If the unions support us and understand us
we'll get along just fine. If they fight us, well, they'll know
they've made an enemy! I don't think they want that. If
people are unfair to me, I can be awfully unpleasant to them!
Because that's just the way I am! Somebody gets in my face and
says I have to do something I don't like it, and there's a lot of
people like me!
