An Open Letter From Speaker Gerald Polley

Had to do a little update today because of the earthquake. People are asking all kinds of silly questions, like "Did Martin Luthor King cause the earthquake because he didn't like his memorial?" I can tell you, Rev. King got a great kick out of that one!  He is rather pleased with his monument!
Another foolish question is "Does George Washington like his monument?"  Poor George cannot believe how many times he's asked that question!  He believes people keep asking it because he's made it known he doesn't like his monument, never has, never will!  He says he's not an Egyptian Pharaoh.  This thought of an obelisk as his symbol does not set well with him.   And some people make other comments about it that he does not appreciate, which he will not repeat!  Now, Lincoln likes his memorial and so does Jefferson.  Lincoln is glad they didn't go with the original idea and show a younger version of him.  He believes he looked more distinguished in his older age.  Mostly the people who monuments are dedicated to in Washington more or less accept their monuments because of the love that the people expressed in putting them up.  FDR has said he never wants one.  He was just an American doing his duty, nothing more, nothing less.  And other presidents feel the same.  As far as Kennedy is concerned the perpetual flame at Arlington cemetery is quite enough!
Of course somebody's going to  ask would I want a monument?  No, I agree with Roosevelt.  All I would want for a monument is a record in history that said "He did a good job. He served the people well."  That would be the monument I would want!  Maybe one statue somewhere when I lose a little bit more weight, but no great structure unless it had some practical purpose. Now that's another thing, altogether.  Build a hospital for veterans and name it after me, now that would be acceptable!
Sometimes the things you read in the news really irk you!  We've really got to change some laws!  The town of  Ravenna, Ohio wants someone else to take responsibility for it's 150 year old flagpole, we'd call it an historical landmark, because intoxicated individuals are climbing it and might fall off and get hurt.  Well, I've got a simplier solution. You put a sign on the flagpole that says "If you climb this flagpole, fall and get hurt, it is your own responsibility. The city will not cover your medical expenses or, your funeral costs." And if anyone climbs on the tower and falls, too damned bad!  Idiots are taking everything away from everyone!  Nobody can enjoy or have anything because some moron gets himself hurt on it and then expects someone else to pay for it.  We've got to stop worrying about the useless and let other people enjoy their lives and have things that we have had for years!  We've got to stop worrying so much about the dope heads that might hurt themselves when they're intoxicated!  If they do something and hurt themselves it's their responsibility, not other people's.  Other people don't have to take caare of them. If they're idiots, if they're drunks, let's stop worrying about them!  Then maybe they'll grow up and take care of themselves if they know other people aren't going to be stuck with the bill.  Hard, I know.   Those stuck taking care of an individual like this won't like it.  They'll want everybody to protect them. But it's not everybody's responsibility!  People have to take responsibility for themselves.  If they're properly warned whatever happens to them is their own fault!  We've got to get some sanity back into the law!
And also, if a county or city has to spend money rescuing a drunk that gets him or herself in a precarious situation, that drunk will have to reimburse said city or county, if it takes a special tax on their earnings for twenty years.  Another way of discouraging these idiots!
