Robinson, DH. 1999: APOCALYPSE MAYBE. Chicago; Kalos Press,
1997. 245 pp. Paper. Reviewed by Joel Bjorling.
1999: APOCALYPSE MAYBE is a novel of end time prophecy.
It is specifically based on the prophecies of the French seer Nostradamus.
In addition to the millennium, it addresses such topics as trance channeling,
reincarnation, psychics, and out-of-the-body experiences. It is truly
a work of New Age potpourri.
In the novel, Harper Raye, a history professor, is an avid student
of Nostradamus' predictions. She has visions of world calamities,
and she and a psychic friend try to unravel some of Nostradamus' most intricate
quatrains. This book is reminiscent of THE CELESTINE PROPHECY in that over half of it is a search for spiritual wisdom, in this case,
the prophecies of Nostradamus. The plot thickens in the latter part
of the book when Raye, along with a group of cohorts made up of academics,
scientists, and her magician husband seek to avert a global catastrophe
indicated by Nostradamus.
A question posed by this book is how we understand and respond to prophecy.
Is it inevitable, or is it possible to change the flow of history. APOCALYPSE is not a science fiction book, nor a mystery, but it's greatest strength
is its philosophical arguments and conclusions concerning the probability
of the end of the world.
