IMAGINATION'S PLACE

NURSERY
By; Speaker Gerald A. Polley

THE ANCIENT ONE STOOD ON THE HILLTOP WATCHING the facility below.  He waited for The Ax Man to join him.  "They all ready?"  he asked.
"Just waiting for the signal!" The Ax Man answered.
"Now, remember," The Ancient One warned, "wait for me to take care of the guards in the control room first. THEN take care of those outside.  When you've got them all, extinguish the driveway lights."
"You told me a dozen times!" The Ax Man answered.  "I know the plan.  Let's go give your Whitenick friends the surprise of their life.  I still can't believe the government is funding this thing, and don't have any idea what these idiots are doing!"
"Genetic research," The Ancient One answered, "can cover a lot of sins.  Let's get going!"The Ancient One cautiously made his way into the facility, being very careful not to trip any of the censors specifically designed to keep out one of his kind. He reached the control room where the two guards were leaning back in their chairs watching several dozen monitors.  One had a magazine and was laughing hysterically.
"What's so damned funny?" his companion asked.
"I'm reading about those idiots in Europe with the sheep," he answered.  "I wonder what they'd think of OUR little herd down there in the barracks?  We must be twenty years ahead of them!"
The other guard started to laugh, but it was cut short as The Ancient One grabbed each one by the back of the neck and twisted.  There was a snapping sound and both men went limp.  The Ancient One laid their bodies on the control panel, quickly shut off switches, and hurried through the halls.  He entered a large room where two dozen children slept in simple beds.  A nurse suddenly jumped up.  The Ancient One grabbed her by the throat, twisted, then dropped her to the floor behind her desk.
He quickly clapped his hands.  "Come on children!"  he cried, "Quickly!  Quickly!  Your parents are coming.  Let's get the little ones and get out of here!"
"Yes, mine Fuhrer!"  one of the boys snapped.
The children quickly followed The Ancient One into another dormitory where the children were far younger.  The nurse there put up a little more fight...but not much.  Finally they entered another facility containing bassinets.  The older children quickly gathered the babies from them.  A nurse walked in, saw what was happening, and turned to run.  One of the little girls grabbed her arm.
"Don't run," she warned, "you can't escape him. Please?"  the little girl asked, "Spare her?  She's one of the nicer ones."
"Follow us!"  The Ancient One ordered.  "Go with the people I tell you to.  Don't cause us any trouble and I'll send you someplace safe.  Any trouble and I'll send you someplace safe.  Hinder us in any way, and I'll kill you."
The nurse nodded.  They hurried through the halls.  The Ax Man joined them.  "I trashed the computers," he announced, "dispatched the cows.  Poor things!  This wasn't their fault!" "Unfortunate," The Ancient One agreed, "but without them it will take them ten or fifteen years to get the project up again."
They reached the yard where dozens of cars were waiting.  The children were parceled out, the nurse ordered to go with two men that were taking them.
As the cars were rolling out, The Ancient One looked skyward.  Behind them flames started to erupt in the building.
"What is it?" The Ax Man asked.
"Four helicopter gun ships," The Ancient One answered, ripping two road signs out of the ground, "they'll intercept us just as we hit the main highway.  You come in from the east, take the two on that side, I'll come in from the west and take those two."
The Ax Man nodded and both of them rose skyward.
As the cars reached the highway and started to disperse, in the back one boy looked out the rear window.  He saw The Ax Man take the rotors off two of the helicopters and The Ancient one bring down the other two, hurling the road signs like guided missiles.  The boy laughed.
"The fools," he cried, "call themselves The Master Race!  The Fuhrer swats them from the sky as if they were insects!  They think they can defeat him!  They are fools!"
"That's enough of that, young man!" the woman in the front seat remarked. "You know he does not like you calling him The Fuhrer!"
The young man turned around.  "Yes, Mother!"  he remarked.  "But he is what he is!  Nothing in the universe can change that!"
"That is something that can't be argued!"  the woman agreed.  "nothing in the universe can change that!"
The cars sped on into the night, carrying children that would now have happy homes, not be taught to despise others because they were different, but taught to respect all that was good and decent.  Those who would have used them as weapons of evil had lost them forever!
The Ancient One and his friend parted, and headed home, a good night's work done!
