Pest Control
Another interesting question that recently arose was rather the people
of The Ancient Worlds had any pest problems like cockroaches.
Both the Hashons and The Peepians had insects very much like cockroaches,
and they were the same pests to them as they were on Earth. During
the early ages they were dealt with much as they are on Earth today, with
insecticides and such. But both peoples, in the later ages, developed
environmentally friendly control systems. They used repelling systems
that created subsonic vibrations that drove the insects from dwellings
and storage areas. They also used non-lethal traps in which
they gathered the insects and later dehydrated them, and used them for
poultry feed. In some places cockroaches were even raised as waste,
to be used as poultry feed.
We Havens had quite a bit more of a problem. We had virtually
no rodents, and our cockroaches filled this food niche, some of them becoming
as big as mice! We used every means at our disposal to deal with
them, but in the end found that the best defense was natural predators,
the most effective being a nonvenemous spider about as big as your hand.
Virtually every home had a nice little spider's nest, and the spider
had the run of the house,
especially at night. As long as you had a spider you didn't have
cockroaches. The best species were highly prized, and if you
had young to sell, often brought a good profit, probably the equivalent
of $400 - 500 dollars in human currency for this era.
As pets were frowned on among The Havens, the spiders were often the
only non human haven life that children learned to respect, other than
their own species.
Yes, the Old World had their pests, but They also had Their ways of
dealing with them! Mankind could still learn a few things from them.
How Were Forest Fires Were Controlled?
Another question that came up was "Did The Old Worlds have problems
with forest fires like we do on Earth?" In the early days, yes, They all
did. After The Holocaust The Peepians had no open foret left.
So this was no longer a problem for them.
On both Haven and Hades the forests became such commercial enterprises
that when wildfires did occur, it was easy to get into the area, set up
electronic barrier shields aorund them, contain them, and let them burn
themselves out. Even before the development of shields, the forests
had become so controlled that fires could easily be dealt with, as there
was so little fuel for them to burn, as every scrap of wood was used for
some purpose when it was harvested and no debris was left in the forests
to be fuel for wildfires.
By this same period in history on both Haven and, Hades, forest fires
simply weren't that much of a problem.
