Technologies From The Old Worlds
Weather Related Problems
Our articles about the technologies of The Old Worlds have
brought some interesting questions, one because of recent weather
conditions, was "How did The Old People deal with snow
removal in Their high population areas?"
Well, strangely, neither Hades or Peepi had this problem to any
great extent. The Hashons only had snow in the very high
elevatons, as the northern and southern polar regions. It
was such a novelty to them as to be major tourist attractions.
The Peepian continents were so situated before their Great
holocaust, that their major population centers had very little
snow either. After The Holocaust they had so much that they
couldn't remove it, they tunneled under it, building their
structures beneath it, and just harvested it, as they needed it.
It was only my Home World, Haven, that had a real problem with
snow removal. Many of our major population centers just
happened to be built in the major snow belts. And though we
were creatures of the air, heavy snowfall did inhibit ground
transportation considerably.
In Ancient Times the problem was dealt with much as it is dealt
with on Earth, today. The snow was gathered up and either
hauled away, and dumped outside the cities, or melted and allowed
to flow away in the draining systems. But in later ages,
first shields were generated over the cities, that caused the
snow to gather in designated areas where it would melt away in
the summer. Then, when transporter technology became
available, this was combined with the shields. The shields
would cause the snow to be gathered at a funnel at the
transporter station where a continuous transport beam would shoot
it to a resivoir sometimes thousands of miles away to melt and be
used to irrigate vast desert regions.
Sometimes when there was a major storm people in these arid
regions would rush to the receiving station to marvel at the tons
of snow falling into the resoivor and play and frolick in it. The
same process could be used to handle flood waters, the water was
simply channeled into a transport station and sent some other
place that it was needed. At the heyday of our technology our
ability to master the elements was formidable, to say the least!
