IMAGINATION'S PLACE
FICTION

A CONCLUSION
By; Speaker Gerald A. Polley

The Ancient One and his companions landed by the back door of an office complex.  The Ancient One worked the entry pad and the door opened.  He went to a computer, turned it on, and punched in an i.d. code, then brought up the email.  There was only one message, which The Ancient One looked at oddly.
"General," it said, "you are needed at Point Alpha.  There are circumstances there that need your attention.  Come when you can.  Operations."
"Point Alpha?"  his female companion muttered, looking at the message curiously.
"Hell!" The Ancient One answered.  "Come on," we'd better go find out what this is all about!"
They quickly took flight, and landed outside of a base in the west.  The Ancient One's male companion muttered, "Oh, here!"  The Ancient One changed his appearance, becoming an Air Force General.
"Proper attire," he told his two companions.
His male companion became an Army Captain, and his female companion became a Marine Corps Major.  She looked down at herself curiously.  "Did I get everything right?"  she asked.
"Looks like you'd pass a pretty close inspection to me!" The Ancient One answered.  "Come on!"
They made their way to the base's gate.  The guard there did not seem at all surprised by their appearance
"We're going up to Alpha," the General snapped, "kindly notify the staff we are coming."
"Yes sir!"  the Sergeant snapped.
By the time they reached the bunker at the center of the base several dozen officers and a couple of civillians were gathered there.  "Yes, gentlemen?"  The Ancient One asked.
"The tunnel has closed, sir," an Army General explained.  "We need your assurance, sir, that the closing is permanent."
"Then, let us proceed," The Ancient One snapped.
They entered the bunker and descended several flights of stairs.  "Oh!"  The Ancient One's female companion moaned.  "This is where the others came through.....the ones that weren't compatible."
"Yes," The Ancient One confirmed.
They reached the cavern.  "As you can see," the Army General continued, "stone has appeared in the cave, but we dared not remove the shield without your presence in case there was some kind of trick."
"Remove the shield!"  The Ancient One snapped.
Several of the men quickly undogged clamps, swung chains down from a crane in the ceiling, attached them to rings, and began to pull on the chains.  There was a popping sound and the huge piece of glass swung free, was hoisted up, and slid back.  The Ancient One entered the cavern and began to feel its walls.  After a few moments he nodded.
"The energy they used to bridge the dimensional gap is gone," he finally managed, sounding a bit sad.  "Their Spirit World has collapsed.  Probably there's only a few hundred of them left."
He stepped out of the cavern.  "General!" he snapped, "This entire facility is to be filled with concrete from bottom to top.  The glass is to be replaced, just in case.  The annoying Senator can have his wish now.  This base can be closed and abandoned.  The necessity for it has passed."
"Yes sir!"  The General snapped. "Thank you for coming, sir!  Is there any chance we'll end up like that, sir?  Could what happen to them happen to us?"
The Ancient One shook his head.  "We're trying our best NOT to let it happen, General.  Maybe with a little help we'll succeed.  Good evening, gentlemen!"
"Good evening, sir!" everyone snapped.
The Ancient One and his companions made their way off the base and took their true forms.  His female companion shivered.
"How many of them were there?"  she asked.
"Whatever the Earth's population was here on April 7th, 1989," The Ancient One answered.  "That's when they reached their peak.  That's when they began to die.  They were almost exactly paralell to us."
"And they're all gone?"  his female companion moaned.
"All but a few hundred!"  The Ancient One answered.  "They chose the wrong path, they chose the dark road.  Once you start down it there's no turning back."
"Damn!"  his female companion snapped.  "We CAN'T let that happen here, we CAN'T!"
"Then we've got to get busy," The Ancient One snapped, "we've really got to get busy."
He spread his wings and soared skyward, his companions in pursuit.
