Chapter Nine

Now all in this village were not friends to Muhammed. There were some who were in league with the merchants in Mecca, and who Muhammed's dealings had made poorer because they were not men who dealt honestly.  And Muhammed's Workers had exposed their dishonesty and they were angry with him.
"If this so-called Prophet was to speak no more," their leader remarked, "our friends in Mecca would reward us greatly, for we have made them rid of him."
And they took pry bars and went up on the wall above Muhammed, and loosened a great stone, and caused it to fall, thinking to crush him. For Muhammed was directly below it.  But when they looked over, they saw Muhammed still lying in the grass, peacefully sleeping.  The great stone lay beside him, and a winged being stood by it, dusting off his hands, and looking up with an angry expression..
Those with Muhammed saw the Jews on the wall with the pry bars, and cried "Assassins!  Assassins!  They have tried to kill The Prophet!  Seize them!"
And the Jews fled, but a great number of their own people blocked their retreat, and laid hands on them, and brought them back to Muhammed and his party. And the chief of the village synagogue came out, and asked what was amiss.  And the people explained to him.  And he asked the men if they had done this thing.  And they answered "Yes, and it was good, for a winged demon had come and saved Muhammed, showing that he was, in reality. a creature of evil!"
And the chief of the synagogue said "More likely a Messenger From God protecting The Prophet.  You are damned by your own words!  Take them out to the trash pit, and stone them!"
And the crowd took the merchants out and on the edge of the trash pit, stoned them unto death.
Now, those with Muhammed wanted to take their swords and massacre all in the village because he had been attacked.  And Muhammed rebuked them, saying. "You are madmen!  You would punish the innocent with the evil!  They have done what is right.  They, with their own hands, have slain the offenders.  They are our friends, our brothers and sisters.  You shall not harm them.  If you do you are not my brothers."
And the men apologized, and they journeyed on.  But the news of what had happened spread, and people were not happy that those who served the merchants of Mecca had tried to slay the Prophet, and they began to do even less business with them than they had done before, making them even angrier at Muhammed.
"We must find a way to make him challenge us," the merchants conspired, "a way that will turn the people against him."
And one of them had a thought.  "Muhammed is extremely protective of his daughters.  Two of them are married to men who have lost much money because Muhammed has taken so much business from us.  If they were to start raising their hands against Muhammed's daughters, only Muhammed would go to their defense.  And when he begins to interfere between husbands and their wives, we will raise the people against him, saying he teaches evil, he turns wives against their husbands, which is against all tradition.  This is the greatest weakness of his Teachings, the one most disliked.  We will use his own ignorance against him."
So it was that Muhammed's son-in-laws began to abuse their wives, Muhammed's daughters.  They would blame them for things they had not done, and strike them in public for no reason.
This went on for very little time before Muhammed heard of it, and he was not slow in acting.
