Chapter Sixteen

Now there were two great joys in his life.  Now, Muhammed's boyhood friend, Abu, could not join in the fighting.  For though he was about the same age as Muhamed, the stiffening of the joints bothered him greatly, and he was often in pain.  But he sent his son, Kosh, and his grandson, Abu, to aide Muhammed, and the grandson adored The Prophet, and spent every free moment with him he could.  And Muhammed made it known that he and his  granddaughter would be wed when they were a bit older.
There was also another, because the Meccans were attacking the caravan routes, the people of Judea were also being affected, and their leader, Abraham, came down with a good number of men, to aide Muhammed, and he would sit and listen at every opportunity, that The Prophet spoke. And his son, Daniel, adored The Prophet, and like Abu, spent every hour with him he could.  And they were like to Muhammed, true sons.  And Daniel, too, looked with favor on one of Muhamed's granddaughters.
Muhammed did not want the boys in the fighting, for they were too young.  But Abu was an adventurer, and liked to go scouting.  Now, there was one family among the Medinans, who had rejected Muhammed, and had joined forces with the Meccans.  And they captured Abu.  He did not fear, for captives had been well treated, and ransomed back, or, traded for other prisoners.  But the leader of this family was told this was one of Muhammed's favorites, so he insisted the boy denounce Muhammed.  The boy would not, and they beat him for many hours, but still he was faithful to Muhammed.
"If he is one of Muhammed's whores, treat him as such!" the family leader finally roared. Each of them took a turn using the boy as a man would use a woman. Then they took a hot iron and burned out his eyes. Then, they burned out his ears and cut out his tongue! Then they castrated him. Finally they took the iron and the family's leader wrote upon his back "A gift to Muhammed from his clan."
"Take the filth out!" he ordered, "Dump it by their camp." His men did so, but it was two days before the boy was found, and he was barely alive.  He was brought in, and when Muhammed saw what had been done to him, his heart was filled with rage.
"Everyone OUT!" he cried.  Everyone quickly left  "I know you're there!"  Muhammed cried, "Show yourself!  Explain this to me how could this be permitted?  Why could you not stop it?"
Northern Star appeared.  "Muhammed!" he began, "You must understand!  We are bound by rules beyond the ages.  There are things we can do, and things we cannot do.  The boys have chosen to die for you.  Once they have made that choice, we have no right to interfere.  We cannot interfere!  Their destiny is theirs.  If they choose to die fighting for the Truth, and exposing evil for what it is, then we cannot lift our hand!  They won't let us!  Once they have made their choice, we are powerless! The boy died so you could avenge him, and teach this enemy a lesson that none would forget for all time.  The nobels of this house have done this evil, they must pay for it! You must go and see that justice is done!  Ride boldly, go right to their camp!  Do what must be done, seize what treasure you can find, and retreat!"
"And what of him?" Muhammed asked.
"He is in excruciating agony, " Northern Star answered.  "All that he asks of you now is that you forgive him for causing you this pain, and give him release.  If you do not, he will live like this for three or four more days before death claims him."
Muhammed knelt down beside the boy, picked up a soft cushion, put it over the boy's face, and held it until his chest stopped rising and falling.  He held it a few more minutes, just to be sure, then sat it aside and rose.
Northern Star smiled.  "You did well!" he praised.  "Look!"  He held out his hand, and the boy appeared as he had been, in a shimmering, white robe.  He smiled at Muhammed, and said "Be at peace!"  A shimmering doorway appeared, that seemed to be thousands of falling tears.
Three beautiful young maidens came through the doorway dressed in gowns that were virtually nothing at all!  They surrounded the young man, looking him up and down and giggling, then one took his hand and led him towards the doorway.   The boy looked back one more time and smiled before he was ushered through, and the doorway disappeared.
  "Now," Northern Star cried, "Ride!"
Muhammed emerged from the tent, his steed was ready.  He mounted it and thundered off.  As he did so every man in the camp rode after him, taking up a column of fours.  They sent out no scouts, but rode boldly, and two hours before nightfall, spied the camp they sought.  Muhammed did not break stride, but rode right in.  The outer two of the fours split and encircled the camp, while the inner two followed Muhammed to its heart. Those in the camp seemed to be unaware of them, but finally rose the alarm, but it was too late.
