IMAGINATION'S PLACE

MAKING CONTACT
By Gerald A. Polley

The Ancient One and his companions had been out late, but the weather was miserable so there was plenty of power. As they were headed over an arid desert region on their way home The Ancient One spotted something far below and headed down. On the hard, desert packed surface an old tortoise was making its way. Three riders on all terrain vehicles were circling around and around the tortoise coming closer and closer to it all the time. "Oh oh!" The Ancient One's male companion remarked, "Somebody's about to become worm food!"
The Ancient One's female companion only nodded. The vehicles were coming around for another pass. The Ancient One landed just in front of the tortoise and waited. At the last moment he materialized, becoming incredibly dense, harder than any substance that naturally existed on earth. The rider of the ATV in the lead saw him, but there wasn't anything he could do. He hit The Ancient One full velocity! Pieces of the ATV flew in one direction and the rider flew in another one. The other ATVs slammed into the wreckage and their riders went flying as well.
When the dust settled The Ancient One walked over to the lead rider who was now a crumpled pile of flesh laying in the dust. The man looked up at him with a bewildered expression, and muttered, "Why, man? It was only a damned tortoise!"
The Ancient One looked down and answered "It was a living thing, man!"
"So was I!" the dying man remarked.
"Not any more!" The Ancient One answered.
The man gasped and fell silent. The Ancient One stood up, then went over and examined the oter two riders. They hadn't survived the impact with the ground. The Ancient One picked up the tortoise and took flight with his companions following.
In an area where it would be safe, The Ancient One put the tortoise down and let it waddle off at its own good pace.
"I love it," The Ancient One's male companion remarked, "You send them to their just desserts with such effortless ease!"
"There's no way I'd call that dessert!" his female companion remarked. "I'd call that pain!"
They all looked at each other then roared with laughter!
"Come on!" The Ancient One encouraged, "We've got to get home! It's going to be an interesting day tomorrow."
"Aren't you gonna call somebody to cover this up?" The Ancient One's male companion asked.
"Oh," The Ancient One sighed, "suppose I'd better go back and make sure there's no awkward questions."
He flew back to the scene of the havoc he had caused, picked up one of the ATVs, carried it back, and carefully positioned it. When he was done he stood up and nodded. "There!" he remarked, "Perfect! Now they'll think they ran into each other. Nobody's really going to look at the scatter patterns that close."
He repositioned one of the bodies so it would be in the proper place, and covered up where the original blood stains had been. His male companion nodded.
"Saved our friends a little work," he remarked.
"Oh!" The Ancient One laughed, "Beginning to see their benefits now?"
"Once and a while," his companion remarked, "they do seem to be useful!"
The Ancient One and his female companion laughed. "Let's go!" The Ancient One ordered. They flew off and The Ancient One's female companion looked back.
"Sorry, boys!" she remarked, "You caught him on a very bad day, a VERY bad day!"
