IMAGINATION'S PLACE
FICTION
THE CALL
By; Gerald A. Polley
The Ancient One and his companions had been extremely busy. They went far afield every night. But one morning as they returned late from an adventure The Ancient One led them far south of his home. They approached a group of buildings surrounded by a fence. An elaborate temple was in one corner. The Ancient One led them into one of the residential buildings. Women, young girls, and young boys were mulling around, getting ready to do morning chores and go to their school. The Ancient One led his companions into a room. They materialized and then shut the door.
"It's over there, on the shelf," The Ancient One snapped, "hurry up!"
His female companion went to the shelf, took down a cell phone, and punched in a number. "Hello?" a voice came out of the phone. "Texarcana abuse shelter. Do you have a problem?"
The Ancient One's female companion began to speak in a voice that was not her own. "This is Mary. I live out at the compound outside of Templeton. Do you know where it is?"
"Yes, dear!" the voice on the phone answered.
"I want to leave and they won't let me leave. My husband hurts me. He keeps hurting my baby. Now I'm pregnant again. I don't want to have another baby."
"How old are you, dear?" the voice on the phone answered.
"I'm fifteen," The Ancient One's female companion answered. "Please help me! Please? Send someone? I want to leave here! I want to live outside. I want to be like other people. Someone's coming! I have to go. I'm not supposed to be using the phone. It's for when people go in town. I'm not even supposed to know it's here. I have to go!"
The Ancient One spoke in a voice that wasn't his own. "Who's in there? Is someone in there?" He knocked on the door. His female companion shut the phone, put it back on the shelf. The door began to open and they all dematerialized. A woman walked in in a long dress and looked about curiously. "I could've sworn I heard someone in here!" she commented to someone outside the door. Then she shut it again.
They left the building and when they got outside The Ancient One's male companion began to roar with laughter. "That was precious!" he moaned, when he finally regained his composure. "But I've never seen you lie! I've never seen you do anything like that."
The Ancient One looked at him rather perplexed. "We didn't lie!" he said, "Mary lives there. Her husband is abusing her. He's torturing her baby. The other women permit it. We've warned them. If we can find them doing any evil we'll expose it. We just exposed it, that's all! Mary wanted to call. We simply called for her. If they do a voice graph it will show it was Mary's voice. If they do a voice graph on her husband it will show that it was his voice outside the door. There's no way they will be able to tell the difference. We didn't break any rules! We simply helped someone send a message. We don't care about the decent people here, we desire them to live their lives in peace. But the ones that are doing crap, the ones that are hurting others to enhance their position we will deal with! It's that simple! We deal with things any way we can. When we're given an opportunity we use it."
The Ancient One's male companion turned to his female counterpart. "That was a brilliant job of acting!" he praised. "That's sure to get somebody moving!"
"Actors entertain," the female companion answered, "we dispense justice!"
"Speaking of dispensing justice," The Ancient One continued, "let's go check on that meth lab to the north. Maybe it's time for them to have an unfortunate accident. Somebody's told me their grandmother has got the kids. There's no children there."
"Bye-bye meth lab!" the male companion muttered.
They soared away. That afternoon a social services worker walked into a judge's office with a CD player. "Your honor," she snapped, "we've got it! We have a call from the retreat, traced to one of their cell phones and positioned in their compound! It's a plea for help. We need a warrant and back up!" She played the CD, the judge took the warrant and signed it.
A couple of days later The Ancient One saw the report of the raid on the t.v. at work. "Got ya!" he muttered.
