PLEASANT DUTY
By Gerald A. Polley

Though it never got much publicity the south during the '60s wasn't the only place where there were church vandalizing. It was going on in Maine, too. Certain congregations were trying to drive out people of other congregations. We won't mention who the unnice congregations were. Well people can have a very good idea. Anyway, one of the groups I worked with helped rural churches fund volunteers who would spend the night in their churches and make sure they weren't bothered. Several times I spent my days off standing such watche. It was usually at a church out in the country, not far from where I lived. I rather enjoyed this particular church because the minister had a stout but attractive daughter named Sandy, who would bring up my supper and stay for two or three hours before her father came up and got her. Sandy's visits made this particular duty very enjoyable.
Very little happened there except one night I heard some noise on the porch, turned on the light, opened the door, and fired a couple of blanks into the air. The next morning when the reverend came to open the church he noticed there was an unopened can of black paint and a brush on the porch, and by it a considerable brown stain that ran across it, down the steps and disappeared in the parking lot! "What could that be?" he asked.
"I'm not sure," I told him, but I think something got scared last night! That's just a wild guess, but I have a suspicion that's what it is."
The minister looked at me rather perplexed for a couple moments, then his eyes widened. "Oh!" he managed, "I'd better get the janitor to clean it up. It could be quite unsanitary!"
I laughed heartily. "Yes," I agreed, "it could be!"
Sometimes your youth had its enjoyable times. People laugh because I was a good samaritan. They say "Oh, you'll have no fun doing that!"
People that say that never met Sandy! Sometimes it was a lot of fun being the good guy!

THE END

This has got to be one of the most jam packed issues we have ever published! It just never stops from beginning to end! We don't want to say too much here to spoil it for everyone, but there's been a lot going on and there'll probably be a whole lot more going on! We hope we will not run into government censorship and have our work interfered with. But we will keep reporting on what is going on. Someone once said our lives are never boring. That's an understatement! Some of the things that God wants us to do are very difficult, but as we're fond of saying God never asks the impossible, the difficult, yes, never the impossible! But our enemies are back in Washington and it is definitely going to be a struggle! Who knows what the future might bring? God wanted us in Washington by January 1st. That's not going to happen, obviously! But if a miracle should happen you never know! The next issue might be published from D.C., we'll just have to wait and see. Que sera sera.

***************

A great philosopher was once offered a free ride on a ship that was said to be unsinkable. His answer was "I would never so tempt God!" The ship sank! It was called The Titanic. It is a wise man that doesn't tempt fate! Every man should know that his time on Earth is temporary, and what he does will be weighed and measured. The Bible says it best; Never tempt the Lord thy God.
