For this UFO article I would like to use the story my mother told me several
years ago.
One evening we were all sitting around talking about UFOs, and I was telling
about the different sizes and shapes they come in, when my mother, who had
been barely listening to the conversation suddenly spoke up.
"Why, I've seen one of them!" she said, "It was before you were born, just
after The Great Fire on Mt. Desert Island. I remember I'd put your sisters
to bed, and laid down myself, but then I got a strange urge to get up. Going
out to the kitchen I looked out the window over the sink, and saw a strange
light over Cadillac Mountain.
Curioius, I opened the back door. It was a beautiful night and I stood
there watching this thing for maybe an hour, thinking 'What a strange airplane!
It must be a blimp, though I've never seen one that big, or that glowed blue
like that. And why did it keep shining that bright red light onto the mountain?'
It seemed to be searching for something.
Finally, it turned, went out over Surry Bay, hovered there for a few moments,
then shot straight up, and out of sight.
I haven't thought about it for years. But it must have been one of those
things you're talking about. Now that I think about it, a blimp couldn't
move that fast, could it?"
"No, mother," I said, "it couldn't."
Without another word mother went back doing the dishes, and we all returned
to our conversation. But the story always stuck in my mind, and I have taken
this opportunity to finally put it down.
The other day, while I was finishing my old job at the pizza parlor, I was
out in the diningroom busing the tables when I stopped to speak to two young
men. They were wearing large crosses, carrying Bibles, and dressed in nice
suits. We spoke for a couple of minutes, and they seemed nice enough. Moving
on, I came to a black lady with her darling newborn child, and began to speak
to them. As the young men were leaving, one of them spoke quite loudly and
in laughing tones as they passed.
"See?" he said, "I told you this guy is some kind of pervert! He talks
to n____babies!"
Straightening up, I considered telling him who the pervert really was; not
merely because he had insulted myself and an innocent child, but because he
had so shamed the symbol he wore, and the Sacred Book he carried, and The
Blessed Lord that spoke through its pages.
When people choose to put on a religious leader's symbol, and carry His
Words, they must also choose to foolow his doctrine. This young man obviously
knew nothing about The Lord Of Love he represented, or he would not have
spoken thusly. I hope that others think before they speak, that they remember
they are the living symbols of Those they follow. And if they cherish Their
Teachings they will abide by Their Ways.
I would mention to peole like these, these statements;
"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."
"Above all else I tell you this; love one another."
"Suffer the little children to come unto me. For surely, unless you become
like these little ones, you will not know the kingdom of Heaven."
