of the universe's enemies will join their forces against a common evil."
"We come from the end of time," said Susan, "from the time when the universe is dying. There are only ten world ships left. And in order for us to survive, we must come back into the past every now and again to tap energy sources that would have gone to waste otherwise."
"The universe is dying?" Zoe asked.
"All things, in time, dear child," Susan told her, "must die. Nothing is forever."
"Who are the Dark Ones?" asked Jamie.
"They are the ones who cannot accept peace, who cannot live in harmony with others. Their plan for survival is to go back in the past and set up their empires, and live out their lives as the masters of their own ancestors. This we cannot permit. It would change the whole fabric of space and time, all would be plunged into total chaos."
"All existence as we know it," said the Doctor, "would come to an end. You most certainly must prevent that from happening. You are Gallifreyan, are you not?"
"We are all one with the people," Susan answered, "but yes, I am Gallifreyan. And before you ask, my husband is human....or as human as you can understand the term. But in our age the two races are so intermixed that it's hard to determine who is the ancestor of who."
Zoe and Jamie missed the significance of her words, but the Doctor did not. Caiaphas returned, his clothes and armor sooty and dirty, but a broad smile was on his lips.
"We have done them much damage," he said, "their scheme is defeated. It will be a long time before they try to move again. We can count on many months of peace." He took off his armor, excused himself, and freshened up.
"Before you leave, Doctor, do join us in our victory feast. It would have not been possibile without your assistance."
The feast was such a celebration as Jamie and Zoe had never seen and they danced and sang for hours. A group of Scots appeared, one of whom was almost the mirror image of Jamie, and another group of humans, one of whom resembled Zoe. The two were occupied for many hours while the Doctor, Caiaphas, and The High Council chatted on and on. It was very late when Jamie, and Zoe found their guests leading them to a very special place.
"Our forefathers," they said, "brought parts of their worlds to be part of each of the ten great ships. This part is from Earth. It is Holy Ground, special ground."
"It's a cemetery!" Zoe exclaimed.
They were led on to a central tomb at the head of which was a great vault. On the vault was a golden plaque that said "The Doctor," and, swirling out around it were pictures of fifteen different men. Without a word Zoe touched the second picture with a special kind of reverence.
"Did he build all this?" she asked.
"No," their companions told them, "but he left the desire in his children to keep peace and harmony in the universe. We thought you should see before you leave, that you should know; but do not tell him."
Zoe smiled. "He knows!" she said, "He knows. And he's just as proud of you...of all of you."
"We'd better get you back," their companions told them. "The celebration is almost over."
They found the Doctor by the TARDIS gently rocking back and forth and staring at the darkening sky. As his companions joined him, he reached out and opened the TARDIS door.
"Well, I guess we must go," he said, "to on one in particular. "I guess we must go. They've done well though, I think...the Gallifreyans, the humans, the Martians...they've all done well. I think they've ALL done well. Did you two enjoy yourselves?" he asked his friends.
"Oh, YES!" Zoe announced. "Oh, yes! I've had the most wonderful time of my life."
"It's not too many people," the Doctor announced, "who get a glimpse of their future...not too many at all!" He entered the TARDIS and set the controls for no particular place, to no particular place at all. It was just time to go.
