Soon the whole place was rocking! When the song was done
everybody clapped and cried "Speech! Speech!" William
rose.
"I can only say this," he remarked, "yesterday I
was not alone. I was in the company of many brave men and women
who performed exceptionally, and bless them all!"
Everybody repeated "God bless them all!"
They had a good meal and outside made their good byes. "Oh,
by the way," William asked, "this may be an
embarrassing question, but what did you tell my superior,
Cordell?"
Cordell didn't even look surprised. "I told him," he
answered, "that you carried out your assignment
professionally and by the book, showing exceptional skill and
courage. That those you are after seem to have a great deal of
bad luck. That Mr. Shakona's death could no way be attributed to
you, or, any of the other marshalls. That none of my people were
near him when he fell off the roof. To my knowledge not a living
soul was in his vicinity. He thanked me for my report, and said
it would be entered into the record."
William grinned. "Well worded," he finally managed,
"extremely well worded!" He put his hand to his
shoulder. "Ooooh!" he remarked. "Arrows, you're
driving! See you in eight months!"
William continued getting into the car.
"In eight months!" Cordell promised, watching them
drive away. He noticed Trivette looking rather disturbed.
"What's the matter?" he asked.
"I'm worried," Trivette answered. "About
what?" Cordell insisted.
"Well, if they put this on t.v.," Trivette answered,
"who would they have play me? I mean...I wouldn't want him
making me look like some nerdy type!" Everybody burst out
laughing.
"Well, I'd like to have Mae West play me," Alex put in.
I think Chuck Norris would play Cordell. He could do the kicks.
Come on Trivette, who would you want to play you?"
"I can't think of anybody!" Trivette answered.
Everybody roared with laughter, and headed home, encouraging
Trivette to just wait and see, just wait and see!
