Chapter One
As the woman drove she listened to the tape though she had
heard it dozens of times before.
"Now relax, Agent Scully," the man was saying,
"clear your mind. Try to remember what happened to you after
you were abducted."
Her own voice came on slow, but strong.
"There were only momentary periods of consciousness. I
remember doctors and nurses around. The last time was a little
bit clearer than the rest. There was screaming, lots of
screaming. One of the nurses came through my curtains with a
hypodermic. She looked terrified.
Then something reached through the curtains, grabbed her from
behind, and pulled her back through the curtains."
The man's voice came in. "You mean SOMEONE grabbed the woman
from behind."
"No," her voice came back, "I saw the hands. They
weren't human. The nails were long and pointed, the top of the
hand and the arm were covered with a plushy fur. I heard the
woman screaming "No! No! Please! I was only following
orders. I was only doing my job!" Then she just stopped
screaming.
A few moments later a man came in. He wasn't dressed as a doctor.
He wore a brown uniform.
"Well, well!" he comforted, "What have we got
here? Don't be afraid. I'm a friend. Who are you? Where do you
come from?"
I told him and he smiled. "Well, I think I'd better take you
home now. I'm all done here. I can't help the others, but you're
savable."
He picked me up like I weighed nothing, and carried me through
the hall. There were bodies everywhere. Some of them weren't
human! He was counting as we walked. We got outside and he
stepped away from the doors. When he hit zero there was a
tremendous blast. Fire and debris shot by us, but we were
protected.
Then, he started to run. I felt strange. I looked down at his
hands. They weren't human hands any more. Then I heard flapping,
like great wings. I heard him say "Go to sleep now, Agent
Scully."
That's the last thing I remember until I woke up in the
hospital." The woman reached down and turned the tape off.
The radio automatically came on as she did so.
"This is Stephen West" a voice was saying, "at
Wakefield, Connecticut. As of yet no one has been able to give an
explanation of what has happened here, at Anderson
Pharmaceutical, but the loss of life has been considerable. The
research building is gone, as are much of the production
buildings. We've been told anywhere from
one-hundred-and-seventy-two to two-hundred-and-twelve people may
be working here at any given time. So far twenty-one survivors
have been pulled from the rubble.
One rescuer has told us that a blue gas began escaping from the
research building and suddenly exploded. This is all that's
left."
"Anderson Pharmaceutical?" the woman muttered. She
parked the car in her private space, got out, taking out the tape
as she did so. She began to fumble with her keys.
Suddenly there was a whooshing sound and she was knocked off her
feet. At almost the same moment the lamp post where she would
have been standing exploded.
The woman instantly scurried for cover, grabbed her cell phone
and quickly dialed.
"This is Agent Scully," she panted, "I'm at my
residence. Somebody just took a shot at me!"
In the distance there was an ear-piercing scream. "I need
back up," the agent continued, "I need it NOW!"
She stayed under cover until two police cars rolled up. Four men
quickly surrounded her, and, using their own bodies to shield her
got her in the house. One of them stayed with her while the other
three hurried back outside.
The agent dialed another number on her cell phone. A moment later
a man's voice answered. "Mulder here," he announced.
"Mulder, it's me. You'd better get over here. Somebody just
took a shot at me. Have you been listening to the news?"
"No," Mulder answered, "I've been working on the
files."
"Anderson Pharmaceutical blew up tonight," Scully
continued.
"Stay undercover," Mulder ordered. "I'll be there
in twenty minutes."
FBI Agent Scully laid down her phone. One of the police officers
returned.
"We found him, ma'am. He's on a garage roof down the street.
Somebody got to him before we did."
"Kindly do not move anything," the agent requested.
"My partner is coming. As soon as he's here we would like to
examine the body."
"Understood, ma'am," the officer answered. "It's
going to be forty-five minutes before the coroner can get here,
anyway. We'll secure the area."
A female officer entered and the man that had stood quietly by
withdrew. The female officer looked to the kitchen. "Would
you like a cup of coffee, ma'am?" she asked. Agent Scully
nodded. The officer quickly fixed a large pot, and they shared
it. It seemed like forever before her slim, dark-eyed partner
entered.
"You alright, Scully?" he asked.
"Just shaken," she answered. "We'd better get
going. They promised not to touch anything. Would you get my kit
from the car?"
Mulder nodded and hurried off. Scully met him at the end of the
sidewalk and they started down the street, a uniformed officer
leading the way.
