speak could mean our lives. Where have you
learned of such things?"
8 "People talk," answered Morn. "I'm very small, they don't pay any
attention, and I listen. I'm a VERY GOOD listener. I want to know what
your people believe. I have to know how they're different."
9 His mother sat down and motioned him to sit on the arm of her chair.
"What I am going to tell you," she began, "you mustn't ever let anyone
else know that you have learned it." She put her hands on the boy's
cheeks. "Understand me, my son," she cautioned, "this means BOTH our
lives. Never, EVER speak a word of what I tell you!"
10 "I am little, mother," he answered, "but I understand."
11 "Very well," agreed his mother. "A long time ago on my world, there
was a Merchant named The Old Fox. And one day he went on a Journey ...."
12 And so began Morn's education in The Ways of his mother's people. He
was soon a Master of all their Knowledge, though no one knew of it but
him and his mother.
13 As each year passed, he became stronger, wiser, and bolder, but he
was still lonely. He did not know that a solution for that loneliness
was coming. For a day after he had been born, not very far from the
Palace, a Haven had been born. His father was General Bold Star, of The Space Fleet,
and the child was called Northern Star.
14 He, too, was wise, and bright and his father's pride and joy. Many
evenings the father sat teaching his son his peoples' traditions, and
giving him stern warnings.
15 "You are a member of the upper class," he instructed, "you have the
right of way on the street. Your gold Church Symbol gives you first
service in any shop, restaurant, cafeteria. You will go to a school
especially for your class. You will have the finest of everything. But remember, you are not
guaranteed your high position. You must work very hard for it.
