"He's gone, alright," he agreed, "broke his neck.
He was probably dead before he hit the ground."
18 Hearing the flap of wings they looked up. The Stretcher Teams, their
emergency lights flashing, dropped from the sky. When Morn saw them, he
motioned them towards North. "This one's gone," he called,
"tend to HIM."
19 The first Stretcher Team settled beside North. The Medic opened his
kit and went to work, first giving him an injection for the pain,
setting his broken wing and leg in temporary splints, then examining
him thoroughly for other injuries.
20 The second Team landed by Morn and the dead boy. The Medic first
checked the body and when he was sure there was nothing he could do,
began treating Morn. Morn complained he wasn't badly hurt. "I'll be
the judge of that," insisted the Medic. "Remove your tunic. After he'd
passed a scanner over Morn' s body, he ordered him on the stretcher.
21 "I can fly!" argued Morn. The Medic pointed to the stretcher and in
an angry voice repeated his command. Morn reluctantly obeyed. As he
laid down, something touched his shoulder, and there was a buzz. "I
didn't need that!" Morn snapped, disliking the injection.
22 The Medic only shook his head. "Weren't you in pain?" the man asked.
23 "A little," Morn admitted.
24 "Then you needed a little!" the Medic told him. He strapped down
Morn's legs and waist but left the other strap off. "You're just as
stubborn and brave as they say you are," the Medic responded, "and as
cool and steady as a rock! Most men in as much pain as you are, would
be screaming their heads off! Now, lie still and be quiet, until I can
turn you over to a Doctor. I don't particularly want The Lord God mad
at me because I didn't take the best possible care of His favorite son!"
25 "Yes, sir," Morn answered, trying to smile back at the Medic.
