He had no meeting scheduled. It had to be one of
his sub-commanders! When he finally traced the meeting down, the
sub-commander's name gave him a pretty good idea of how the traitor had
gotten into the organization. The young man's name was Gray Comet.
15 When North filled him in, Gray Comet gave North the names and code
words for half his group, and they hurriedly called each member,
warning them of the trap. After North had finished his list, he waited.
16 A few minutes later Gray Comet called. "I can't reach one of my
people," he announced. "He's gone out, and his mother said he's not due
back until late tonight. Wherever he is, he's going directly to the
meeting from there."
17 "Where's the meeting supposed to be?" asked North.
18 "In the conference room at the old Wolf's Lair Hotel. We're supposed
to be a private debating club, and we use one of their shielded meeting
rooms."
19 North had been to that ancient hotel many times, and knew it had
only three public entrances. He told Gray Comet he would meet him at
the hotel with another person, within an hour.
20 "How will I know you, sir?" asked Gray Comet.
21 "Just be at the upper entrance," North told him, "I know you. When I
come up to you, I'll say 'Isn't it a fair day for a mystery?'"
22 "Very well," agreed Gray Comet, and broke the connection. North
quickly called Gray Mountain, and they both hurried to the hotel.
23 Gray Comet was fascinated to see who his leader was. With the time
for the meeting only an hour away, they couldn't talk much. Gray Comet
transferred a picture of the unwarned member, whose name was Bright
River, from his pocket com to those of the others, and they hurried off
to cover the entrances. It was North who intercepted the young rebel in
the main lobby. Giving him the code word, he quickly got him out of the
