9 "Sir," objected Firing Control, "that's going to put us dangerously close to the reaction field when that negative fuel hits."
10 "I know," agreed North, "but it's a risk we'll have to take."
11 An hour later Communications let out a cry of joy. "Got them, sir! No voice, they're responding by key."
12 The man began to write quickly on his data board. "Heavily damaged, five dead, eighteen wounded. Had to dump system engine, nailed one of them with it. Number one star drive will not last more than two hours. What is your plan? We receive but can only transmit by key. Working to restore full communications. End transmission."
13 "Firing Control, give Communications your data on what I want them to do. As soon as you've transmitted THAT, Communications, tell them it is imperative they reestablish data link. We need PRECISE information on where their pursuers are!"
14 The Communications Officer transmitted and a few minutes later began to note down another message. "Negative," it said, "maneuver too dangerous! If you succeed in striking pursuers with negative energy, you will be in the reaction field. Repeat do NOT attempt!"
15 "Communications," ordered North, "transmit. We will perform maneuver with or without your cooperation. Data link STILL necessary."
16 A quick reply came back. "Commander of approaching vessel would be advised I am a Senior Commander this area, and also senior graduate. Attack plan is cancelled, repeat, cancelled!"
17 "Communications," snapped North, "advise other Commander his vessel is too damaged for him to maintain
