105 "You men standing around," ordered North, "form up. Make ranks. Double time it!"
106 In moments the men were in ranks. There were about two-hundred of them. Morn walked over and passed before the ranks. "Gentlemen," he began, "I need thirty-nine men for an unpleasant duty, strictly volunteer. I will ask those who will accept this assignment to step forward." In perfect unison nearly two hundred men stepped forward and stamped their boot. "Thank you, gentlemen!" Morn acknowledged. "Commander Northern Star, you will select the squad. I prefer older men, no youngsters for this."
107 North nodded. "Yes sir," he replied, beginning to realize what was happening.
108 Morn went over to four Officers standing nearby. "Gentlemen," he snapped, "come with me. Bring your field recorders." The Officers picked up their equipment and followed.
109 As they were approaching the forty men another Officer came up. "Field Commander," he pleaded, "the situation downstairs is getting desperate. The women are at their apartment doors, asking if they're not to die with their men, at least let them say good-bye. The people in the other apartments are joining in the cry. Either we need more men to force them into the apartments and secure the doors, or we must...." the Officer shrugged.
110 "Very well," Morn ordered. "Let the women come up, but no children. I want no children to see this. Let some of the other tenants come up, too. We need witnesses."
