56 The next few weeks were hectic. Both Morn and North had much to do
and security was intense. There was surprising open hostility to Morn's
appointment. The lists that North got grew daily which he did not
really mind. Many on them were on lists he already kept. They were soon
scattered to the loneliest outposts or worst assignments North could
find. Some of the more powerful ones disappeared completely and there
were rumors of
mass assassinations, but North had better uses for these people!
57 His secret factories needed labor, and men grateful to be alive,
tended to do half decent work if their wives and children were well
treated. A legend was beginning to grow around North of ruthlessness,
of almost machine-like efficiency.
58 The open hostility quickly disappeared on the surface. Morn became
The Glory Of The Empire. Wherever he went he was greeted by cheering,
adoring crowds. Every handmaid in The Palace sought his favor, much to
his wife's displeasure. Many who had most of his life shunned him, were
suddenly his friends and openly offering him favors.
59 Morn took every advantage of the opportunity. Those who indebted
themselves to him now would be called upon to repay the favors in the
future. Most would do so willingly. For those who came in contact with
Morn quickly lost their hostility and were won over by his charm and
