and reached into his mind, also, joining with him
mentally as well as physically.
64 They were in the midst of their relaxation when North suddenly
became aware of a third presence in his mind. Its entrance had been
subtle, gentle. It didn't seem to be reaching for control, only feeling
what North was feeling. But North realized it was a male's mind, and
his reaction was instant and terrible.
65 With sudden fury he drove the intruder from his thoughts, lashing
out with a mental burst that even stunned his female companion. They
backed off from each other. "You alright?" North asked.
66 "Yes," the Doctor moaned. "That attack wasn't directed against me, I
only got the side effects!"
67 North reached for his clothes and hurriedly dressed. "I'll be back,"
he promised. "I have to check on something."
68 "Maybe I should come," suggested the Doctor.
69 "No," argued North, "I don't think there's anything you could do. If
I do need your assistance, I'll call."
70 The Doctor nodded and North hurried off. It wasn't far to Great
Bear's cabin. The doors opened before North even touched the
communicator. North walked inside and found the Hashon lying on his bed
in obvious discomfort.
71 North put his hand on the Speaker's forehead and withdrew the energy
charge he had sent out. The Hashon's features became relaxed, and he
began to breathe in a normal manner. North backed off and sat down on
one of the cabin chairs. "How did you know it was me?" Great Bear asked.
72 "Not very difficult," explained North. "You and I are the only 10th
level Telepaths on the
ship! And only a 9 or above could have crept into my
