volcano to the north."
40 Firing Control checked his instruments. "Not hard to find at all
sir!" he announced, "it's directly below!"
41 "Good!" North continued, "you pilot, you know the way."
42 Less than an hour later the makeshift but quite serviceable bus
pulled away from the ship and headed down to the planet's surface.
43 They touched down in the great canyon where the ship should have
been, but there was nothing there, only sand. Everybody walked around
in disbelief.
44 "This is the spot," the Doctor assured, "I KNOW it is! I recognize
that formation in the cliffs. It looks like the arteries of a hand!"
45 "Damn!" the Engineer sighed, "Just a dream. Strange, we all had it
at once!" Not looking where he was going the Engineer tripped and fell
with a 'thump' on a pile of sand! As he got up, he cursed. "Of all the
damned luck! I cut my hand!"
46 The Doctor came over and took a look. "Nothing serious," she
commented, "just a scratch. But there's something in it. I'd better get
it out. Odd ….it's a little sliver of metal!"
47 "Metal?" cried North, "Where'd he fall?"
48 "Over here!" cried the Engineer. The Engineer began to kick at the
sand. After a few moments a metallic disk appeared. The others gathered
around and began to dig with their hands.
49 "It's a sensor!" cried the Engineer, "It's been pretty badly burned
and couldn't be functional, but that's what it is!"
50 "We're standing on it!" North screamed. "Over all these years the
sand covered it up! That sensor must be part of her forward array. The
emergency access hatch to the command deck must be around here
