of its Temple. The building was ancient and had probably been there for thousands of years. North walked in and admired the symbols. He became aware of someone standing beside him and turned to see a Speaker in traditional robes.
145 "Good day!" The Hashon welcomed, "This way." He led North to a small room with several desks and motioned for him to sit down. There was a book on the desk and several pens. "The Test is in two parts," The Speaker explained. "The first one deals with philosophy and custom, the second, with Law. Each Test takes an hour, and there is a half hour break between each one."
146 "Explain something to me," asked North, "why The Tests? When a person reaches a certain age, why don't they just become part of The Faith?"
147 "It is a common question," The Speaker answered. "The joining of The Faith is a serious business, and requires an informed commitment. If one joins without knowing all their duties and responsibilities, one is not ready. Any may worship The Lords, all are welcome in Their Temple, but to dedicate themselves to Their Service and accept the responsibilities that that demands they must know The Lords' Ways."
148 "I see!" North said, "You do not believe in blind commitment, in Faith by trust."
149 "You understand well!" The Speaker agreed. "Are you ready to begin, Northern Star?"
150 "You know who I am?" North asked.
151 "No mystery," explained The Speaker, "Your wives come to my Temple. They have shown me pictures of you. I recognized you at the bottom of the steps. I have been waiting some time for you to come." The Speaker looked at his watch. "Are you ready?" he repeated .
152 North nodded, picked up a pencil and opened the book. The questions were multiple choice. A few of them he had trouble with, but not much. He had just finished the last question when The Speaker reappeared. "Come," he invited, picking up the book, "my mate has
