hold stones and sticks. Year after year the
membrane on the little wings became less and less, until finally it all
but disappeared, and we have arms and hands. The major wings slowly
separated from the rest of the body, and finally became the wings we
have today."
27 "How do we know all that?" the little girl asked. "Nobody could have
seen it?"
28 "We found the bones of our dead," explained North, "that had been
buried in many peices. Our Wise Men put them together like puzzles, and
the study of our bodies tells us some of these things. See the little
ridges of skin on your arms that gets smaller every year? When you were
a baby just born, they were actually little flaps, remnants of those
wings your Mothers and Fathers of Long Ago still had!"
29 "Then those fuzzy little things on Hades were our relatives?" the
little girl asked.
30 "No, my precious! " explained North, "they merely evolved in a
similar way. See, life takes many forms. Though it is similar on many
worlds it is just a little bit different. The strange thing is, that
the more advanced life becomes, the more similar it is. That is why
your mother and I were able to make you. Though we come from two
different worlds that circle two different suns, our genes are so
similar that they will bond.
And those genes that your mother doesn't possess will draw in loose
genes. So you have the things from me that Hashons don't have!"
31 "You mean my WINGS!" the little girl proudly answered.
32 "Yes," North said, rubbing her nose with his, "I mean your wings!
And speaking of wings, isn't it time for somebody to have their flying
exercises?"
33 "I do believe you're right!" agreed Sweet Cloud. "All right, you
little flying terrors, let's go! Off to the park! We've got to exercise
those little wing
