Chapter Two
The Turner Against was explaining the danger to
them. "But we, too, have new weapns. Two or three of our new
conversion bombs can devastate an entire planet. Not that we care to use such a weapon, but they certainly would be a
discouragement to the enemy if we dropped a few on their major planets!"
2 "Unfortunately," put in The Commander Of The Fleet, "that is about
all conversion bombs are good for....attacking planets. They are of
little use against ships unless they happen to be in orbit around the
planet you blow up. That would tend to destroy quite a few ships. But
of course you'd have to lure the enemy in for that trick to be
effective. The target would have to be one they were determined to
take."
3 The Turner Against looked very thoughtful. "What if it was a target
they couldn't resist protecting," he inquired, "one that they thought
was so valuable to the enemy they could not destroy, one that they
wanted to take at all cost?
4 What if that world had, say, four of these conversion bombs buried
deep in its crust, the enemy was lured in, and those bombs were
suddenly detonated? How many ships do you think would be destroyed?"
5 "Any in range of the explosion," remarked The General Of The Fleet,
"anything within standard defense orbits and beyond. If those planets
had any near moons I'd be surprised if THEY survived. But that plan's
no good. There's only one planet The Goddens would give everything they
have to take ....only one that would be that important to them."
6 "I know," sighed The Turner Against, "and that is precisely the
planet I am thinking of using! I would imagine The Goddens will make
their thrust for Hades first. It's far easier for them to reach than
Peepi."
7 What if resistance fell? What if they were able to take their target
systems with little resistance and
