Chapter Seven
The First Speaker that had been in office for
many seasons was getting old, and many felt he was no longer doing his
job properly.
2 Finally, one day, he had an announcement put in the papers. "It is
time for me to step down in favor of a younger person. This long,
bitter conflict with The Oneness has drained my strength. The Land has
many problems, and I can no longer effectively deal with them.
3 Let those who would be candidates for my office come forward with
your petition, so those that are qualified may start speaking and run
for the office."
4 Now, there were many troubles in The Land. Though the people were busy with the war, other business was poor. The
economy was depressed. Many banks had closed, many people had lost
their life savings. Thousands of people were out of work, living on the
charity of their neighbors. The sick were denied entrance to hospitals
if they didn't have any money.
5 Gray Boar had ideas on solving many of these problems and often spoke
with friends he had in government, trying to get them to bring his
ideas to those in authority. Many liked his plans, but did not have the
power to bring them into being.
6 One day, a short time after Gray Boar had made his speech against the
liberals, another committee came to his lab. It was made up of some of
the richest people in The Land, and some of the most influential; Scientists,
Newspaper Editors, Merchants. There were too many for the house, so
chairs were brought out, and they sat around in the yard as beverage
and cakes were served.
7 "Now what, gentlemen," asked Gray Boar, "could bring such a
distinguished crowd to my humble works? What scientific problem do you
need solved now?"
8 "It is not a scientific problem," announced Swift Fox, Chairman of
The Fox Car Works, "it is some-
