And when the signal did not come on the appointed day, her heart was
filled with dread. Something had gone wrong!
54 She gathered her forces for an assault on the enemy's earthworks. If
they were in trouble she would break through and reach them. But as she
moved her people into position the next morning, there came a cry from
one of her men. "On the hill! On the hill!The signal! It's the signal!"
Her people roared with joy!
55 "Come on!" she screamed, "You know what we have to do. Let's keep
them busy!"
56 Her fighting people pressed forward and engaged the enemy, but there
were few enemy to engage. With little difficulty they were up and over
the earthworks driving the enemy before them back towards their camp.
57 Here, they found the reason for the enemy's lack of numbers. Most of
them were busy fighting Thundering Dove! But there didn't seem to be
that many of them, anyway! They quickly captured what was left.
58 A runner came up with orders. "Send your fighting people along the
earthworks," he said. "Clean up the rest of them. There shouldn't be
many."
59 "Where is Thundering Dove?" demanded Bay Blossom.
60 "Up on the hill with the wounded. He's not in too good a shape."
61 Bay Blossom told her men to follow orders, then rushed up the hill.
Thundering Dove limped down to meet her, his foot in a bandage. "What
happened?" she asked.
