The dog stopped and looked back. Nameless Fox patted him on the head and pointed back the way they'd come.
The dog trotted back to the fork and stopped. Nameless Fox again patted him on the head and pointed in the right direction and the dog trotted off.
Nameless Fox knew he was near his village. There should be shepherds somewhere nearby with their sheep! But where were they?
His answer came a moment later when the dog rounded a bend in the trail and nearly ran over the herd of sheep! The terrified animals scattered in all directions, bleating with all their might. The terrified shepherds rushed forward...in their lead, Swift Fox, Nameless Fox's oldest friend.
"Stand off!" screamed Nameless Fox, "Stand off! It's alright! He won't harm you!"
The other shepherds stood their gorund, but Swift Fox advanced, his spear at the ready. Big Fellow crouched, as if ready to leap.
"The spear!" cried Nameless Fox, "Throw it away! I was attacked with a spear. They enrage him! Throw it away!"
Now, Swift Fox was extremely afraid of this great animal, but he trusted Nameless Fox. With just a moment's hesitation he threw the spear aside and came forward. The dog relaxed and let him approach.
When Swift Fox got to his friend's side, he wrinkled his nose and looked down at his leg. "You're hurt bad," he said, "we'd better take you down."
The dog began to emit a low, threatening rumble. "I don't think," argued Nameless Fox, "that's a good idea! You'd better let him carry me right into the village. And you'd better come along to warn them he's safe, or there'll be a panic!"
"I'm fast," cried Swift Fox, "but there's no way, by The Lords Wisdom, I can keep up with a dog!"
"You lead," instructed Nameless Fox, "and set the pace. He'll follow!"
Swift Fox nodded and started off. "Follow him, big Fellow," ordered Nameless Fox, "stay behind him." At a man's speed the dog trotted off.
They made quick time to the village. Cries of panic quickly arose, but with Swift Fox in the lead to warn everyone to get rid of their spears, everything went well.
They came to a halt in front of Nameless Fox's house. When Yellow Blossom saw him, she feared nothing but rushed to his side. The dog merely looked on with concern as they lifted down his burden.
"Take him to The Brother's House," ordered Swift Fox, "Brother Bear has been training with the Healer, and they also have the biggest table in the village."
Now, The Brothers of The Old Fox were a group of men that swore their lives to public service. They had built a common house in the village, and were currently building a dam and irrigation system, the profits of which would build and maintain a school for the village.
As they entered the door, Brother Bear greeted them. Fortunately, it had been his turn to cook the evening meal. "Hold him," he cried, "until I can spread a boiled sheet on the table! Get those women and children out of here! If this is as bad as it smells, I don't want them seeing it!"
He removed the bandage and straightened up. Yellow Blossom covered her face and turned away. "Praise The Lords," sighed Brother Bear, "I hadn't put the vegetables in this hot water! Somebody shut that door!"
As one of the men went to do so, a huge paw came up and slammed into the door, knocking the man back into the wall. "I think," suggested Swift Fox, "you'd better leave it open! If he thought we were hurting Nameless Fox, he might come right through it!"
Brother Bear, for the first time, noticed the dog. "Good idea," he agreed, "VERY good idea! Somebody run for the Healer. He's supposed to be in the next village. I cannot deal with this, myself.
The most I can do is get these filthy clothes off him, wash him up, and clean that wound as best I can.
This is going to take alot of cutting. I don't know if the leg can be saved. The color is not good. If the infection has not got into it, maybe. I will put some medicine on it, to slow down the infection."
They stripped Nameless Fox and Yellow Blossom helped bathe Brother Bear gave him some medicine to help him. They put a boiled sheet over him, and, blankets. with the pain.
They so that the Healer would have enough light to brought in extra lamps and hung them about the kitchen operate by when he came. Then, all they could do was wait.
