He took from his pouch a letter and showed it to Nameless Fox, who read it and nodded. "Yes," he answered, "I thought we would hear more from this woman. We had a fair hearing on her case, and the judges found in my favor. But the woman could not accept their decision." 8
"I know," said the Warlock. "I spoke with the presiding Speaker as is part of my duty. He assured me the hearing was aboveboard and more than fair. But I am required by Law to inquire into any complaint, and this one fascinated me! You actualy ride these dogs?"
"Almost every day," answered Nameless Fox. "Would you like to go for a ride?"
"You're serious!" gasped the Warlock.
"Positively!" Nameless Fox told him, "Brother Bear! Can you spare me for awhile?"
"We will be all day," the Brother answered, "catching up to what you have already done! Go! With our blessings!"
As they started back for the village, the Warlock had to know the story of how Nameless Fox had acquired the dogs. As Nameless Fox told it, the men listened in silence, not wanting to miss a word.
"And to be able to tell people," the Warlock finally explained, "that I actually walked with a man that lived such an adventure! That you survived is miraculous! But that out of it you acquired these great animals is even more remarkable!"
I will tell this tale by my fireside again and again!" When they reached the village Nameless Fox called Lady, saddled her, showed the Warlock the proper way to sit and handle the reins and off they sped! When they returned the Warlock was breathless.
"When your pups are grown," he cried, "and you are ready to sell them, I MUST be your first customer! I MUST have the first one!"
"Sell them?" questioned Nameless Fox, "I never considered SELLING them!"
"You have put a great deal of work into this project," the Warlock told him. "Of course you and your village MUST profit from the incredible thing you have done."
There's not a man I know that would not pay at least ten silver for one of these dogs and they would be cheap at that price! You, sir, are going to be a very, very rich man!"
And if I were you I would demand a percentage of the profit from any puppies produced from the animals you sell. If the breeders of cattle can do this, why shouldn't you?"
Nameless Fox was confused, but he was beginning to see the Warlock's point. With profits he could better care for his dogs...pay helpers. Yes, the idea did appeal to him!"
He made a contract with the Warlock that the first puppy sold was to be his. The Warlock was overjoyed.
"Of course," the man said, "without question, I'm dismissing this complaint. These animals are neither wild nor vicious. The case is totally without merit."
So it was, Nameless Fox dealt with The District Speaker. "Surely," he thought, "this would be the end of it! This woman would not consider going to The First Speaker!" Nameless Fox makes a contract with the Warlock promising him the first puppy sold.
