You must never kill again. You must never even strike another man. For you, meat shall be forbidden, and for those that follow you.
Gentleness shall be your way, and I shall call you My Gentle Ones, My Precious Children. Do not be afraid to speak what is in your heart.
Write down The Law that is in your soul. You know what is right and what is wrong. I do not have to tell you what words to say.
Do not be afraid to speak out. There shall be those who oppose you and those who will call you coward, and mad, but do not let them sway you.
Yours IS The Way of The Light, for you, and your kind. There are many who need your words, many who will follow your way.
You shall stand side by side with The Children of The Sword, battling for The Lords in your own way. Unto you always, peace; prosperity!'
And that day, Lord, my soul was lifted. From that moment I knew the Lords were with me, and what I felt was right.
I went from village to village, city to city, speaking in The Temples, in the markets, in the houses of friends. And I began to gather a following.
We bought out a village near The Western City and established ourselves there. Small parties of us live in other villages, round-about.
All was well until the fighting came. Now these good men call me coward because I will not kill. If that is so, so be it. I would rather be a coward, than again stain my hands with another man's blood.
I have brought, sir, a Book of Our Law. Before you judge me, I ask that you read it."
One of his friends gave him the Book, and he brought it forward. The Dove took it.
"It has long been my opinion," answered The Dove, "that The Way of The Old Fox, The Way of The Lords, was the only True Path for men's souls. I have considered no other Teaching worth studying. But in remembrance of your service to the people I will read your Words before I pass judgment.
Return to me the third morning coming on the next Fifth Day. This is a hard decision and I wish time to think on it.
Before you go, Gray Bear, tell me...your clothes appear very well made, but why is the fabric unbleached? Why do you not dye them?
Gray Bear smiled. "We believe, Lord," he answered, "in using things as close to their natural state as possible. Therefore, we wash, comb, and spin our linen and wool, but never do we defile it with dyes of any kind. Did you know that some dyes are made with blood?"
The Dove looked surprised. "No!" he answered, "That, I did NOT know! For now, may all of you depart in peace."
Now, The Dove read Gray Bear's Teachings and though they were in many ways, different from what The Old Fox taught, they were also, in many ways, in harmony with it. And The Dove's soul was greatly troubled.
"Lords," he prayed, "give me some sign, some message. I find no wrong in what this man teaches, yet it is not the way of Our Teacher, The Giver of Truth. Am I to condemn or am I to approve?"
The night before he was to hear the case, he dreamed a Dream. Again he was in the Fog, and the familiar voice of his Guide called to him. "Come, Lord, I have much to show you!"
He took him to a Great Hall, where a banquet was being held. They stood by the wall, watching. The Dove's Guide asked him, "Do you know what this is, Lord?"
"I would say," answered The Dove, "it is The Feast of Welcome for fighting people who have died in battle."
"Your perception is good!" continued his companion. "Tell me, Lord, how are those here dressed, and what do they eat?"
The Dove did not understand his words, but he looked about the tables, trying to catch his meaning.
Then he saw that some at the tables did not wear the uniforms of fighting people, but the undyed robes of The Gentle Ones. They ate not meat, but cheese.
"I see The Children of The Gentleness sitting among the fighting people as their equals," The Dove announced.
"You see well," praised his Guide. "Tell me, Lord what takes more courage...to go on a battlefield with a sword, shield and armor and fight, or go on one without weapons, vulnerable to all attack, pick up and carry away the wounded?"
"I see," continued The Dove, "and I understand. To call a man coward because he will not fight, is wrong. Sometimes not fighting takes more courage than doing battle."
"Among men you are truly wise," praised his Guide. "Come, Lord, there is a place I must show you." They entered a great valley that was full of Temples. They walked along its beautiful street.
"This," said the young man, "is where all the territories of The Spirit World meet. Here is Tr, The One, The Mukan gods, the gods of Fr, and of the other lower lands, and some you do not know about.
Now, you notice some of The Temples are very shadowy, and the land beyond them very dim. In The Spirit World, the faith of Tr is all but deserted. Only a few souls now visit his Temple.
