introduced his mates, Gray Goat found himself drawn to the older one.
Her womanhood seemed to beckon him. As the meal progressed,all interest
in their discussion faded as his manhood began to burn for her as it
had never burned for any woman.
29 Finally, the Adviser yawned. "It is late," he announced, "let you
not journey back to your tents now. There are beds and comfort here for
you. Spend the night."
30 The older mate took Gray Goat's hand. "I would be pleased to
remain!" he agreed.
31 As the oldest of the two younger wives took The First Speaker's hand
he agreed, also. "Then, let us to bed "continued the Advisor "for a
good night's sleep!" He smiled mischieviously
32 Gray Goat was no innocent. He had had companionship on his lonely
vigils of guarding his flocks, but never had he known a woman like
this! When they were done, he fell into a deep, enchanted sleep.
33 Late in the night his companion rose, crept to the centerpost of the
tent, and withdrew her mate's dagger from its scabbard. As she turned
and headed
back toward the sleeping Gray Goat, she whispered to herself, "It's too
bad, he's kind of sweet!"
34 As she neared the curtains, the lamp suddenly flared. Smoke billowed
from it, engulfing her face. She staggered , as her eyes filled with
tears. She parted the curtain and went in. A lone figure slept on the
cushions, his face away from her. With one swift stroke she drove the
dagger home, jumped up,
and ran through the curtains. "Guards!" she screamed, "Guards! An
assassin has murdered Gray Goat! The Oneness is here! Guards! Guards!"
35 The Guards rushed in. "Gray Goat is dead!" the woman cried, "I saw
