22 "All right," agreed The Hawk, "Speak!"
23 "Our leader is dead. There is only one other man living that knows
what became of the captives. He was the only one that went with the
leader to make the deal for their purchase. He's the one, over there;
the one with only three toes on one foot."
24 "Take this one away," instructed The Hawk, "and keep him safe. Don't
let the others near him!"
25 One of The Hawk's Warlocks joined him. "As you know, Lord," he
explained, "my sister is one of those that was carried away. If this
man will not speak, give him to me for half an hour. I guarantee you
his tongue will move afterwards!"
26 The Hawk said nothing, but came up to the man in question. "We are
aware," he announced, "that you know the whereabouts of our people that
have been taken away. We wish to know where they are now."
27 The man spoke several obscenities to The Hawk, then told him he
would tell him nothing.
28 "This man," explained The Hawk, "is Gray Boar. His sister was
carried away in one of the attacks. He wishes to know where she is. I
see no reason why I should not allow him private conversation with you,
to discuss his sister's whereabouts." Gray Boar took out his knife and
began to rub it on his trousers.
29 "You can't!" the man pleaded, "I know your law! You can't torture
prisoners, your stupid Spirits won't let you. You're bluffing!"
30 "Come along, gentlemen," ordered The Hawk, "I want to show you the
treasure we've recovered. There's three caves full, everything from
gold and jewels to rolls of fabric. And as most of it cannot be
returned to its owners, we are all going to be rich, indeed!"
31 The others joined him, and started to walk
