did not matter anyway. For days Swift Deer lay in
a deep sleep. The Healer had to force food and water down his throat to
keep him alive. The joy of their victory was overshadowed by this
sadness as they marched home. And their speed was lessened for Swift
Deer and the other injured had to be carried gently.
45 Just before they reached the first outpost Swift Deer began to stir.
Though he was weak, he could answer all the Healer's questions. He
could move all of his body. He was alive, and still had his wits. The
news brought a cheer to the whole caravan.
46 As riders from the outposts spread the word of their victory, the
roads became packed with well- wishers. Every campsite became a
celebration, each village they passed gave each person a coin. By the
time they marched into Northern they were a glorious sight to behold!
47 The First Speaker greeted them, and rewarded all with promotions,
and the youths with scholarships given by the universities. The Hawk he
took aside. "What are your plans now?" he asked, "I have a position
coming open that would be perfect for you; assistant to a District

recommendation. I'm sure now, his desire to have you will be doubled!"
