have come to an end many years ago. I brought you
here, I will take you where you must go now. We will go together."
28 The woman sat up. By now the thatching above them was completely
gone, and the sun shone down. "You're mad!" she screamed, "Mad!"
29 "Don't try to run," warned her mate. "The door is bolted, and you
cannot go out into the sun, can you? I think we have talked long
enough. It is time!"
30 He smashed the lamp to the floor, and in an instant the room was
ablaze with fire. The young man rushed forward and seized his mate. The
last sounds
anyone heard in the room were her horrible cries for him to let her go,
not to take her with him.
31 Lord, you never saw such a fire! The flames shot straight up into
the air. They burned through the roof timbers in an instant. The floor
was turned to
ashes and the timbers underneath. But the fire never left this room,
and when it was out there was no trace of them. Even their bones were
gone. Now you know, Lord, why no one will rent this house."
32 The Lady Hawk had been listening in bewilderment. "I don't
understand," she questioned.
33 The Hawk turned to her. "His third mate was a demon. She kept from
dying by sucking the life out of her mates. That's why they aged in
three years. The only way he could destroy her was by dying with her,
by taking her into The Spirit World with him, where she would perish.
He was a very brave man! It had to be someone who loved her. It was the
only way she could be destroyed.
34 We will take the house. I will talk to the owners. Others might be
afraid of it, but I am not. He took it with him. He carried it to The
Lords, and They destroyed it. When it stood in Their Light, and saw
what it really was, it died. Yes, I will honor such courage. I will
abide without fear, in this room."
