the door to Great Mountain's quarters and charged
in after him! They attacked him from all sides, but he and his servants
beat them away.
28 Suddenly, Swift Deer jumped from his bed, ran to the door, and
shouted at the guards. "Get help! Take me to your master,
immediately! He's under attack!"
29 Swift Deer's companions joined him. "How could you know our master's
under attack!" inquired one of the guards. "He's way over on the other
side of the village!"
30 "He's a Child of Spirit, you fool!" snapped the other guard, "He
sees through walls and over mountains! Come on!"
31 They hurried through the corridors and came to Great Mountain's
door. The two guards lay dead outside, two or three attackers around
them. The door was open. Swift Deer seized a sword from one of the dead
men and charged inside.
32 The room was full of attackers and the floor was already littered
with dead. Great Mountain and his servants were backed into one corner
with his women cowering behind them.
33 Swift Deer charged into the enemy's backs, his flashing sword
falling three before they even knew what was happening. But many of the
rest quickly turned to meet the new threat, as more of Great Mountain's
people poured in the door.
34 Swift Deer fought his way towards the Giant. He was battling two
attackers, and didn't see a third coming up behind him. In the press of
bodies, Swift Deer couldn't get his sword around to make a strike, so
he did the only other thing he could do. He threw himself forward, on
the blade, pulling the man to the floor. He tried to bring his own
weapon forward to use
