else. How can our Army of Spirit get here? It's
the last thing in the world they'd think of when they've heard the news
they're victorious! Remember, if the fighting starts, look for the red
scarves before you attack anyone. Only our people will be wearing them."
58 They marched in the city and the street was full of crowds. Swift
Deer's people rushed up the walls, inviting the soldiers down to see
the treasure, and taking their places. They reached the great square in
the center of the city,
and Swift Deer's people already held the gate.
59 The city's War Leader came forward, but he was acting strangely. He
was eying Swift Deer's people curiously, and his hand drifted toward
his sword. "It's worked already?" he questioned "The worm has worked?"
60 Swift Deer didn't answer, but behind him his people began to scatter
in small groups heading into the city.
61 "Don't be a fool, man," Swift Deer warned, "if your people try to
fight, it will be a massacre they haven't a prayer! Forgo bloodshed,
lay down your arms.”
62 "What terms will I be given?" the man asked, knowing his worst fears
were true.
63 "Your city will be unharmed," promised Swift Deer, "your women and
children untouched, only your treasure seized."
64 "You are merciful," praised the War Leader. "You know you had us
when you entered the gate." He raised his arms and called out.
"Everybody listen! Throw down your swords. Surrender. They're not our
people. They're The Children of Spirit. If we cooperate we will be
treated with honor. Don't resist, surrender!"
