19 And all the city's treasure was gone. The houses were stripped.
There was nothing at all. And the enemy even tried to set fire to the
city at the last, but The Hawk had been expecting that sort of thing,
and was ready. When it was all done, they had a city, but little else.
20 The Hawk ordered more provisions brought from the north, again sent
his wounded home. There was barely time to replace them before the
summer dust storms began. "It looks like," admitted The Hawk, "we spend
the summer here. Let us make it worth our wile. We march on Mk.”
21 The Mus were ready. In four places along the road they had built
earthworks. Each one had to be passed before the enemy could reach the
city; or DID they?
22 The Hawk loaded half of his army in his boats, took to the swamps,
capturing the enemy's villages along the way. For the first time he
took the enemy by surprise. Most of his soldiers were on the land. The
villages were full of women, children, and old people, but no
men. The cities, though, had enough men, They avoided the first one in
the swamps and came up the river Mk, captured the enemy's supplies,
besieged the city, leaving their earthworks useless. The enemy
abandoned them, took to their boats, and made for Mk.
23 But to their surprise, The Children of Spirit were waiting for them
in every village. They fled down into the swamp, bewildered and
confused. How had The Children of Spirit brought so many boats?
24 Confused or not, they were not held back long. They returned in
force, and the battle was on again, within a week. The Hawk drove off
