been so unfair? Several of the rich families were
now poor, and they had the unnecessary burden of caring for another
family's Sacred Ground.
91 "Some of my people," Red Cat wept, "I am ashamed to claim as
Children of The Lords."
92 Shy Fox also ran into some villagers with some strange ideas. In
one, a man came to him, saying that The Village Speaker and Council had
attached his property for debt without cause. "Explain to me," insisted
Shy Fox, "what you mean."
93 "Our village school," began the man, "has had much trouble. Many of
the village people are poor, and could not afford to pay much for their
children's
education. So The Village Speaker came up with a plan.
94 'Instead of the parents supporting the school,' he suggested, 'let
us have every person in the village support it. Not by donation, but we
will set the value of their property and each year we will charge them
a percentage of its value. In this way, we can raise all the money we
need, and each child in our village will get a decent education.'
95 'That's taxing!' argued one of the Councilmen, 'WE can't do that!'
96 'It's not taxing,' replied The Village Speaker. 'We provide a
service.….a school so they must pay their fair share of the bill. THEY
get a good education, THEY must see to it that everyone else does.'
97 There was much argument, but finally The Elders agreed, and they
passed this Law. Now, I have not lived in this village for many years.
I come from another village far away. Each year, as is my duty, I send
a
gift to the school where I was taught. But I owe this school nothing. I
