BOOK TWELVE
THE
BOOK OF THUNDERING BOAR
Chapter One
Now, five seasons after Thundering Boar became
Speaker, the enemy began to use a frightening new weapon; a large,
liquid-powered rocket they called a missile, which could send a warhead
to any city of The Children of Spirit, and not all of these missiles
were loaded with explosives.
2 Some of their warheads fell to earth on parachutes, spraying out
deadly gas, or germs. The Children of Spirit did not like using such
weapons, but they retaliated with similar ones. Their retaliation was
so bitter that the enemy never dared use such weapons again.
3 Thundering Boar organized a raid and stole one of the missiles off a
train transporting it to a launch site. It didn't take his brother long
to figure out how the thing worked, and to start building better ones.
His could carry two or three warheads, and hit their targets much
better.
4 His sister was not to be left out of things, either. She continued
work on a project her father had been working on to find enemy planes
by bouncing a radio signal off them, and having it come back through an
antenna. They called it radio echo, and she soon had it working.
5 With hundreds of stations they had easy warning of enemy aircraft or
missiles. The device was a blessing, for it gave the cities warning of
coming attacks.
6 For fifteen seasons more the war dragged on, with no end in sight.
The impenetrable barrier of The Oneness still kept them out. Thundering
Boar considered several plans of breaching one of the barriers, or the
other, but even if they did this, they would face cities that were, in
reality, huge fortresses and fortified villages as well. The death toll
would be horrible on both sides.
