Chapter Four
The first day out, they had no problems, but the second day one of the
carriers fell. They only found scraps of his clothes.
2 "Now you see," Little Dog remarked, "why I have you march so far
apart. No more crowding up. Stay spread out!"
3 The men became even more cautious. The next day they were about a day
away from their destination traveling along some open fields, when
there was a sudden shot. One of the carriers cried out, but carefully
lowered himself to the ground. The rest did likewise. Suddenly, more
shots were fired, and the men took cover.
4 "It's an enemy raiding party!" somebody shouted. "They're on the hill
above us. I count about twenty."
5 "They're not firing repeaters," cursed Red Serpent, "not at THIS
range! They must have special long range rifles. Our weapons won't
reach them."
6 Suddenly there was a shot from nearby. On the hillside above, a man
cried out, fell forward, and rolled down the hill. A moment later
there was another shot. They saw an enemy soldier jump then crawl off
up the hill.
7 Red Serpent finally saw where the fire was coming from. Little Dog
was reloading his rifle "That's the only two I can see," he cried
"Point them out to me."
8 A man shouted from his left, "See the three trees with the round
boulder in front of them?"
9 "Got it!" answered Little Dog.
