They came again. Over the ruins of the walls and the bodies of their
dead, they charged. From the earthworks before them light cannon fire
met them, and a few rifles here and there struck their lines. Suddenly,
behind them, there were explosions. Their Cannoneers were struck by
flying stones. Suddenly men poured from the tunnel
mouths, and were on them before they could even realize what was happening.
36 They fought bravely, but they were simply
overwhelmed. Many fell, the rest were taken prisoner. Those pieces that
could still fire, in moments, were raining death on their makers. At
the same time, barrels came rolling down the hill before them. Little
Dog's timing was perfect! They were almost right on top of the barrels
when they exploded. The stones they had been packed with did their work well.
37 Now, Red Serpent lit a rocket and let it
whistle skyward. On both flanks his cannon opened fire. After three
barrages his people charged.
38 Somewhere out on the battlefield, the enemy
leader's head had been blown away. His men, in total confusion, didn't
even know which way to run. First by ones, then, by tens they threw
down their weapons.
39 The charging Children of Spirit had little to
do but take prisoners, and there weren't that many to take. Seven out
of ten of the enemy were dead or dying. One in ten was wounded, the rest were bewildered and confused, some so terrified
they simply laid on the ground, crying like babes.
40 Red Serpent came out to view the damage. "The
few that escaped," he thought, "will make their stories far worse than it was. The enemy
will
be wondering tonight what this new weapon we have
is!"
41 Their own losses had not even been worth
