31 "He's like a fish in the water," explained
Blue Blossom. "If anyone can make it, he can. And he'll know the best
places to empty the containers."
32 Bold Fox turned to one of his Warlocks. "I want a party of twenty
men to go with him," he ordered. "Pistols and knives only. Make sure
their ammunition is waterproofed."
33 A Warlock hurried out to prepare. Now, the preparations f6r the
attack hegan. Wise Crow returned and that night left with his escort.
Bold Fox waited on a hilltop near the river. A little after they should
have got there, he head shots and torches appeared along the enemy's
lines, and began to head for the river.
34 The report of rifles and pistols filled the air, but finally the
exchange died down. A few minutes later the party returned. They were
carrying Wise Crow and two others. "What happened?" asked Bold Fox.
35 "Worst possible luck," explained the party's leader. We got in
without any trouble. The boy did his job. We were headed back into the
water, when an enemy patrol walked right into us. We got most of them,
before they got a shot off, but the three they got off hit their marks.
We got one
dead, I think this man's dying, and the boy's in a bad way."
36 The Field Surgeons had arrived and were beginning to treat the two
wounded. When they got them back to camp, Blue Blossom took charge of
Wise Crow. She was a good Surgeon, but it took her almost an hour to
find the bullet, sew up the damage, and close the boy up.
