48 "I don't know," marveled Grey Serpent as he
lashed Sorrowful Dove to the raft. "And I really don't care. It saved
our lives. How The Lords did it is something for future generations to
wonder about. All I care is They DID it! Now, hang on! This ride's
about to get rough!"
49 In moments they hit the rapids but somehow the vessels of the
little fleet held together, and they didn't lose any of their
passengers. As they passed the area where the enemy's barricade had
been,
those on the cliffs above them fired a few rounds, but they were swept by quickly, and only a
couple of people were wounded.
50 When the water was calmer, Grey Serpent untied Sorrowful Dove. "Do
we stay with the river," he asked, "or, try to get ashore?"
51 "Let's stay with the water," said Sorrowful Dove, "the flood may
carry us all the way to the swamps, though it should be dying out soon.
We'll make far better time THIS way, than on foot!
52 We have no idea what has been happening other places. We've seen no
mirrors for weeks. All the other cities could be taken by now. I think our best chance is
to go around the edge of the swamps, and try to get north until we can
at least find out what's going on.
53 We don't have much to fight with, if we could raid the enemy
somewhere and resupply, maybe then we could do some good, but like this
we're nearly helpless!"
54 They rode the water until the river began to spread out, and their
craft started to touch bottom. Then, they still stayed with the water,
wading northward.
