Chapter Eleven
In The One-Thousand-Eighty-Ninth Season From The Beginning, a young man
was born in Hawk. Originally he was called Smiling Dove, but soon, as
he grew and became a Witch, interested in electricity, everyone started
calling him Sparking Dove, because in his laboratory there was always
machinery that was snapping and sparking.
2 Fascinated with this strange energy, he sought ways to put it to
work, but before he could do THAT he needed more of it. So first he
invented a great
machine called a dynamo, to make it. "Then," he wondered, "if
electricity can be made by turning the great machine, can it turn great
machines?"
3 So he invented the electric engine. Soon, dams that had once only
been used for irrigation now made electricity. Where there was no
water, the wind was used, and even the sun, itself.
4 Sparking Dove would get power from everywhere. Soon, there was not a
city that did not have dynamos and electric wires. Steam engines
disappeared from the factories as they were replaced by electric engines.
5 Sparking Dove became a rich man. He hired hundreds of young Witches
and set them to work working on hundreds of different projects. He
improved the telegraph, making it possible to send many messages over
the same wire. He invented an engine for trains that used electricity and it soon replaced the trolley cars,that ran
through the desert tunnels. Now trains could run from one end of the
world to the other.
6 One of his Assistants, Running Boar, with his help, developed a
machine to take moving pictures, and another machine for showing them. They called them a moving picture
camera and projector. Soon, moving pictures were one of the most
popular forms of entertainment. An obscure village between Mi and Tr
became
