95 The Voice laughed. "I meant no
offense," he apologized, "I only meant that I took no woman without her
consent merely because her husband offered me hospitality."
96 "Did you hear us complain?" asked Yellow
Blossom. "Did we speak against it? You know by Law that a mate
may refuse if she finds the guest undesirable!"
97 "All right!" agreed The Voice, "All
right! I meant no disrespect! And, I abide by your
custom. I accept with honor the offer that has been given."
98 Red Blossom rose. "It is usually the
eldest mate's honor," she announced, "but if you prefer a younger
woman..."
99 "No, no!" cried The Voice, "If we are going
to follow custom, let us follow custom. Let me not cause more
trouble!"
100 "Good!" said Gray Deer, "Now that that is settled we can go to our beds."
101 He rose and looked at Mountain Glory's
door. Yellow Blossom also rose and touched his arm. "I know
it is my night," she comforted, "but do not think of it. Go to
her. I will clean up!"
102 Gray Deer took her hand, kissed it, then entered Mountain Glory's room.
