Chapter Six
Now, one day, as Gray
Deer and The Voice were walking through the city, Gray Deer became
aware that someone was following them. He motioned The Voice to
continue on, and as they passed a doorway he stepped in. A moment
later a young man passed his hiding place and Gray Deer stepped out
behind him. "All right, you! he demanded, "Why are you
following us"
2 The young man spun but found himself caught
between Gray Deer and The Voice, who was returning up the street. "I
meant no harm!" the young man stuttered. "I heard you talking
about Spirit to those people. I thought if I followed you, you
might talk some more."
3 Gray Deer noticed the young man's tattered
look and thin appearance. "Where do you live, boy?" he asked.
4 "Near here," the young man answered.
5 "Just what is it about Spirit you want to know?" The Voice asked.
6 "That part about living other
lifetimes....does anyone ever remember? I mean does he ever know
he was somebody else?"
7 "Sometimes," answered The Voice, "though it
is best we do not. We sometimes remember shadows. Usually
it is through dreams. We dream about being someone else, but those
dreams are so real we know that they are more than dreams, that they
are visions of the past."
8 "Can we really," the young man asked, "have
bad fortune in one lifetime because of things we did in another?"
9 "If we do not learn from our past," answered
The Voice, "either from this life, or a previous one, we will make the
same mistakes again until we change our ways. What's your name, young
man?"
10 "I am called Crazy Hawk," the boy
answered. "But maybe I'm not so crazy after all! Can I
visit you? Can I study with you? I want to learn more."
11 "There is room in my circle. Come! We
are headed home now. You are welcome to have supper, and
see how we study."
12 The young man's eyes brightened. "Sounds good to me!" he agreed.
13 They started on down the street and had not
gone far when two men approached them, one wearing a Warlock's
cloak. "That's him," he cried, "I'm sure of it. He's still
wearing the same clothes. You there! Halt! You there,
stop!"
14 Crazy Hawk started to go on, but The Voice
grabbed his arm. "Excuse me, good Speakers," the Warlock asked,
"how long has this young man been with you?"
15 "He just now joined us," answered The Voice, "is something wrong?"
16 "This man claims he stole his purse in the marketplace. I'd like to search the lad."
17 The Voice stepped aside, and The Warlock
went through the young man's clothes, but found nothing, which seemed
to surprise Crazy Hawk. "But I'm sure it was him!" the man
said. "He bumped into me. A moment later I found my purse
gone!"
18 "That purse?" asked the Voice, pointing to the man's belt.
19 The man looked down. "It can't be!" he gasped, "It was gone! I swear to you, it was gone!"
20 The Warlock scratched his chin.
"Well, it's not now! And I can't charge someone with stealing if
nothing was stolen. Excuse me, gentlemen!" The two men
walked off.
21 "A man's not too bright," commented Gray
Deer, "to say his purse was stolen, and have it all the time."
22 "His purse WAS stolen," announced The
Voice, "and he didn't have it! I'm also wondering who these two
belong to!" He held out two purses, both well made and expensive.
23 "You took them off me!" Crazy Hawk
shrieked. "That's why he didn't find them. By The Holy One,
you ARE good! I never felt a thing!"
24 Gray Deer laughed. "He's a pickpocket! And YOU picked HIS pocket!"
25 "I didn't want him arrested," The Voice explained. "So, young man, who do these belong to?"
26 "Caravaners," the young man answered. "They
were looking for a boy to have some fun with, and I played along until
I lifted their purses, then, disappeared."
27 "There's enough money here, " The Voice
questioned, "to live for a year. Why did you need so much?"
28 "I've got a girl," Crazy Hawk answered. "She likes pretty things."
