144 The City Warlock complained about
these actions. He said these hooded raiders should leave the
enforcing of The Law to his troops but still, the actions continued.
145 As had happened in The Southern City The Hoods
began to lose their grip on Eastern. Three times Half Face was
attacked, twice he was badly wounded. but each time he escaped, leaving
the streets littered with dead Hoods.
146 As the weeks passed, even The Beggar's
guard softened his attitude towards him. And strangest of all,
Sweet Blossom Bear, this devoted Child of The Gentleness, began to keep
company with this strange, troubled fighting man. Many hours they
sat, playing games with the children, and sharing philosophy.
147 One day Gentle Bear spoke to The
Voice. "My little sister," he commented, "has become a
woman. Do you think she knows she's in love?"
148 "Perhaps not yet," explained The Voice,
"but she will soon. It is going to be a house of strange
contrasts!"
149 "I do not know," continued Gentle Bear,
"he must always be a fighting man. It is in his blood, as it is
in my blood to be gentle. But inside him is more gentleness than any I
have known! I did not know a man could be so fierce one moment,
and so tender another. He is like no man I have ever met."
150 "In our great diversity," answered The
Voice, "in our infinite difference is our strength. The gods want
to make all men the same...weak, dependent, obedient. The Lords strive
to make men individuals, each drawing upon their infinite
capabilities. That is why we are superior. That is why we are
stronger. That is why with us, gentleness and power can exist side by
side!"
151 Gentle Bear nodded. "As you say, Lord, it is so!"
