43 A while later a Healer of The One who had been tending her,
arrived, and insisted that he examine her. Reluctantly, Red
Blossom obliged. The Healer was amazed, and, bewildered. He
came to Red Serpent afterwards.
44 "It is amazing," he cried, "her paralysis
is completely gone! Her heart is strong. She acts like a
woman half her age. I do not understand. A wonder of
wonders has happened here, yet your people do not seem to be amazed at
all. Are you not awed by such things? Do you not find such
miracles wonderful?"
45 "Of course we do!" answered Red Serpent,
"but perhaps we DO take it too much for granted. The Lords have said
'Our Servants shall make your blind to see, your deaf to hear, and your
lame to walk. These shall be signs unto you, that those who come are of
Us. For evil does not restore, evil destroys, so know ye that
when a man does these things, he is of The Lords.
46 We expect such things of our Healers.
Many of our best Surgeons are also Speakers, many of those that use
herbs, also, for it is a Speaker's place to care for the ill. It
is to us, a way of life. But perhaps, as you say, we take it too
much for granted."
47 "Sometimes," said The Healer," you make me
want to be a Child of The Lords. "Yes, I am surely
tempted!" He bade the old Speaker good night, and journeyed home.
48 That evening at the banquet, The Voice learned
that Screaming Hawk, The City Warlock, had the city pretty much under
control. "Though we rule this city," he announced, "we are less
than one-third of its population. The rest of the city are
Trns. Oh, they pay allegiance to us, and obey our Laws, but it's
to their King they're loyal. It hasn't changed since we conquered
the city. These Tians are proud people. Where the villages to the
east, and some to the west are Trn, I allow a garrison here. They
need it for patrols. But the Trn War Leaders are cooperative, and
they want to keep the drugs out of their people, just as much as we
want to keep them out of ours.
So things have been going quite well, really."
49 The Voice was pleased. Lame Dove, the
City Speaker, agreed with Screaming Hawk. Things in the city were
well; though there were some problems because of the differences in
custom, they had been worked out by mutual agreement, and the two
societies worked well together.
50 Red Serpent spoke up. "I am
displeased, though, that I do not have more Workers. My Circle is
what you see, these four men and their mates. We raise much
Power, but I have often felt we should have more."
51 "Do not," answered The Voice, "for I have
dreamed a Dream. In that Dream, The Lords counted you, told me
that your numbers were sufficient, and well for the place that you are
in. You are blessed in Their Sight. I will not have to stay
long here, I am called to other places. I plan to visit our other city
in the land, and return to The Holy Land by The Tr Road, and visit
Western.
52 My Hour grows near. I must soon present my
works to The Lords for Judgment. I will speak in The Temple the coming
Worship Day, visit the surrounding villages, and speak again the next
Worship Day. Then, I must depart. I know you would like for me to
tarry with you longer, but there is much to do."
53 "Of course we are sad," answered Red
Serpent, "but we understand your need. We will give you all
assistance that you may do swiftly The Lords Work and be on your way."
54 "There is one thing," Red Serpent asked
him, "there were four young people that have just taken The Tests of
Adulthood, and the next Worship Day are to take The Bread and The
Wine. It would give them the greatest joy, Lord, if you were to
perform the Ceremony."
55 The Voice smiled. "It would give me the greatest pleasure!" he answered.
56 So it was The Voice did his work in Ti, and prepared to move on.
